The Role of Extracellular Vesicles in Pathogenesis and Therapeutic Strategies

Welcome to the webinar to support and promote the 2nd Special issue "The Role of Extracellular Vesicles in Pathogenesis and Therapeutic Strategies". This issue will continue a focus on an important group of signalling entities extracellular microvesicles.
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are emerging as a valuable source for novel liquid biomarkers, insight into systemic signaling and theranostic tools. EVs, including exosomes and other membrane-bound packets, are released by all cells under a range of conditions, ranging from homeostatic equilibrium to states of cellular stress.

The purpose of this Special Issue is to address specific attributes of EVs as liquid biomarkers for personalized medicine. In providing this overview, this Special Issue will delineate the current foundations and tools for the next steps toward the application of EV in therapeutic strategies for the treatment of a wide range of diseases. Manuscripts may cover either original data in a specialized field, or a comprehensive review. Contributions to any aspect discussed here are encouraged, as well as related topics not explicitly mentioned.

This webinar will include presentations introducing aspects of EV based signaling and biochemistry hereof.

Dr. Allan Stensballe heads the Precision medicine part of the Translational Biomarkers for Pain and Precision Medicine research group at Aalborg University in Denmark. Dr. Stensballe have strong background in protein chemistry and applied proteomics for the study of human disease pathology. In recent years the clinical research focuses on applied omics for investigating triggers of autoimmune diseases and inflammatory mechanisms as well as precision medicine in this context. The research group focus aims to unravel the molecular mechanisms of multiple autoimmune related disorders by application of proteomics approaches also to detect potential biomarkers for patient subtyping as well as predicting treatment outcomes.

I worked in Aarhus University (AU) for 9 years with Prof. Jørgen Kjems for my PhD and postdoc research on RNA sequencing and extracellular vesicles (EVs), which resulted in 12 publications. Now, I am the CSO of omiics, which is a knowledge intensive company conducting RNA sequencing centered projects for external customers. A large part of our work is focused on biofluids, low input samples and EVs. Through research collaborations omiics have been involved in 19 publications on RNA and EVs. Recently, I co-organized the AU EV community to assist communication between EV researchers in Aarhus.

Flow Cytometry Unit, Life Sciences Core Facilities, Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel

Bio
Ziv Porat is an associate staff scientist and head of the Weizmann Institute Flow Cytometry unit (the largest in Israel). His field of expertise is flow and Imaging flow cytometry, which combines the advantages of flow cytometry and microscopy. During the last 12 years, he worked closely with more than 400 researchers, resulting in more than 85 publications, including as the corresponding author. His record includes lecturing at Weizmann as well as all other universities in Israel, research institutes, hospitals, and biotech companies. He initiated, organized and lectured in the annual Israeli Imaging Flow Cytometry user meetings. In addition, he gained international recognition and lectured in many international conferences, and was recently selected for the prestigious “SRL emerging leaders” program of the International Society for the Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC). He is the co-founder of the Flow Cytometry Society of Israel and active in promoting education, organizing workshops and conferences.
