Welcome from the Chair

In order to commemorate International Asteroid Day 2024 (https://www.un.org/en/observances/asteroid-day), MDPI is launching a special webinar to encourage researchers to come together, take action, and highlight how the exchange of findings facilitates efforts to raise awareness about the asteroid impact hazard.

Asteroid research plays a critical role in understanding the potential threats posed by near-Earth objects, developing strategies for impact prevention, and exploring the possibilities for resource utilization in space.

Studying Fireballs from Earth and Space: Gaining Insights on The Unique Cometary Superbolide of May 19th, 2024
Bio
My research focuses on the formation of primitive solar system minor bodies (comets and asteroids) and their fragments in space (dust, meteoroids) or as meteorites on Earth. These objects offer insights into the origin and evolution of the solar system, as primitive meteorites retain early chemical and isotopic conditions. I lead a research group at the Institute of Space Sciences (CSIC) that has recovered and characterized meteorites from Spain and Latin America. We also conduct lab experiments on the astrobiological roles and physico-chemical properties of meteorites. My expertise in physical properties led to my involvement in NASA's Stardust and DART missions. I specialize in sample-return missions and set up a clean lab at ICE-CSIC for studying meteorites and returned materials. I contribute to planetary defense through the DART and ESA's Hera missions, focusing on the Didymos binary asteroid. My work includes studying shock effects, collisional compaction, and the mechanical and thermal properties of asteroids and comets. Additionally, I co-signed the 100X declaration for Asteroid Day, promoting public awareness of asteroid impact hazards and global communication strategies.

Asteroid Hazard Mitigation: No Sustainability Without Survival
Bio
Marta got her degree in Differential Equations and Functional Analysis at the Department of Mathematics of the Università degli Studi Roma Tre, Rome and her PhD in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. She has accomplished a 3 years post-doc within the EU funded AstroNet-II Marie Curie research training network in astrodynamics. She worked as a validation analyst in the field of airport traffic control and management and at the NEO Coordination Centre (ESA-ESRIN) as an Orbital Dynamicist for asteroid orbit determination and impact monitoring services. Marta joined Cranfield University in 2019, and is now Module Leader of Astrodynamics and mission Analysis, Logic and Automated Reasoning and Astrodynamics Software.

Asteroid Impacts and Their Consequences
Bio
Before joining the Swedish Institute of Space Physics and the University of Helsinki, I held the position of Senior Scientist at several institutions, including Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Russian Academy of Sciences. I was honored with a research fellowship at the European Space Agency (ESA/ESTEC), awarded annually to one researcher from outside the ESA member states. My research spans planetary science, astrophysics, fluid dynamics, acoustics, and remote sensing, with a passionate focus on developing neat ideas for cometary dust trails, meteor observations, their interpretations, and meteorite recovery. From 2007 to 2009, I earned my Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics, specializing in the Mechanics of Fluids, Gases, and Plasma and Planetary Sciences, from Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU). Prior to this, I completed my B.Sc. and M.Sc. with high honors in Aeromechanics and Gas Dynamics from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at MSU (2002–2007). Additionally, I hold a Docentship in Planetary Sciences from the University of Helsinki, Finland (2017).
