New Challenges in Public Health and Epidemiology in the XXI Century
Welcome to the 2024 Scientific Webinar on “New Challenges in Public Health and Epidemiology in the XXI Century”. As we navigate this era of unprecedented health challenges, staying informed about the latest trends and research shaping the public health landscape is crucial. This webinar brings together leading experts to share their insights on critical issues that impact us all.
We will begin our journey by exploring the Mediterranean diet, mainly focusing on wine and alcohol consumption, to understand their broader health implications. We then transition to an essential discussion on clinical patient safety, highlighting cutting-edge strategies to enhance patient care. Our concluding session will delve into the intricate relationship between nutrition and mental health, specifically examining how dietary habits affect depression.

Prof. Dr. Miguel Angel Martínez-Gonzalez, MD, PhD, is a renowned chronic disease epidemiologist. He is currently a Professor and Chair of the Department of Public Health at the Medical School, University of Navarra, Spain, and an Adjunct Professor at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. With over 30 years of experience, he has focused on studying the determinants of chronic diseases, including nutrition, lifestyle, clinical factors, metabolomics, and genetics. He founded and led the SUN project, a significant cohort study with 23,000 participants. Prof. Martínez-Gonzalez has been the Coordinator of the PREDIMED research network and Principal Investigator of the PREDIMED trial, the largest nutritional trial in Europe. He has published landmark papers from this trial, including groundbreaking research on the impact of a randomized dietary intervention on cognitive function. Currently, he leads two long-term randomized trials, funded by the European Research Council: the PREDIMED-Plus (n=6,874), assessing the effects of an energy-reduced Mediterranean diet, and the UNATI trial (n=10,000 to be recruited), testing guidelines on alcohol consumption. Together with Prof. Frank Hu (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health) and Dr. Clary Clish (Broad Institute, MIT), he has undertaken leadership roles in NIH-funded studies of metabolomics and the risk of chronic diseases in the context of large intervention trials.
