Welcome from the Chair
The Journal of Marine Science and Engineering is hosting a webinar entitled “Challenges for eco-friendly and energy-efficient modern ships “on 7 November 2023, at 9:30 a.m. CET, discussing the recent advances and challenges in designing and operating eco-friendly and energy-efficient modern ships accounting for environmental requirements, challenges and innovation on alternative fuels and economic impact of air pollution generated by ships in operation.
Event Chairs
Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering, Instituto Superior Tecnico, Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal
His expertise includes ships, offshore platforms, fatigue and ultimate strength, reliability and risk-based design, maintenance and retrofitting, energy efficiency and carbon footprint, and hybrid lightweight marine structures.
Invited Speakers
Technical University of Varna, Bulgaria
His research and expertise have concentrated on naval architecture, hydrostatic, damage stability, metamodels and ship design, energy efficiency, green shipping, and maritime safety.
Naval Architecture Ocean and Marine Engineering, Strathclyde University, Glasgow, UK
His research focuses on marine emission controls, engineering thermodynamics, and ship ballast water management. In recent years, he has been undertaking research on zero carbon emission fuel applications, e.g., ammonia and hydrogen as marine fuels.
His primary research focuses on modelling, simulation, analysis, synthesis, and optimization of dynamic behaviours and transient responses of ships and their systems and green shipping and ship energy efficiency.

Closing Summary from Chair
On November 7, 2023, the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering organized and held a public webinar intending to discuss the current challenges and advances for eco-friendly and energy-efficient modern ships. The team speakers used this opportunity to share their experience and research activities, exchanging ideas and project results with the webinar attendees.
Professor Yordan Garbatov, from the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC) at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal, chaired the webinar and discussed some fundamental aspects of “Economic impact of air pollution generated by ships in operation. Professor Peilin Zhou from Strathclyde University, Glasgow, UK, discussed and introduced some project results related to “Research and innovation on alternative fuels for marine zero carbon emission, where Dr Petar Georgiev, from the Technical University of Varna, Bulgaria, presented the new trends in “Environmental requirements for energy efficiency for ships in operation” and Dr Hossein Ghaemi from the Gdansk University of Technology, Poland, presented and discussed different applications on “Methods and challenges for ship energy efficiency”.
At the end of the webinar, some discussions on the current challenges and innovations in alternative fuels for marine zero carbon emission and methods for ship energy efficiency were discussed.
