Offshore Renewables for a Transition to a Low Carbon Society
Dear Colleagues,
In this webinar, our focus will be on ‘Offshore Renewables for a Transition to a Low Carbon Society’. Marine renewable energy resources are abundant, and the amount of energy that can be generated using existing technologies varies from site-to-site and day-to-day, depending on the location and weather conditions.
As we are all aware, a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions represents an issue of increasing importance for a transition to a low carbon future. From this perspective, the technologies that are currently associated with marine energy extraction are very important for achieving the expected energy efficiency and environmental protection targets. On the other hand, although significant advances have been noticed in recent years, regarding the extraction of ocean energy, there are still important challenges related to the implementation of cost-effective technologies that could survive in harsh marine environments. At the same time, wave energy farms can influence in a significant way the nearshore dynamics and provide an effective coastal protection.
Such aspects will be discussed in this webinar, which seeks to contribute to the renewable energy agenda and to improve knowledge and performance especially as regards harvesting wave energy.

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati, Romania
Liliana Rusu is full professor at ‘Dunarea de Jos’ University of Galati, Romania. She received her first Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from ‘Dunarea de Jos’ University of Galati in 2006, while the second PhD in Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture was awarded to her in 2009 by University of Lisbon, Portugal. In 2015 she received the Habilitation degree. Her collaboration with CENTEC continued in the framework of a Post-doctoral fellow (individual grant financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology), currently being Professor Collaborator. Since December 2017 she is a Member of the marine knowledge expert group of the European Commission. Also, she is Short Term Scientific Missions Coordinator of the WECANet project, COST Action 17105. From 2016 she is Member of the National Ethics Council for Research Activities in Romania. Her research interests cover the fields of wave modelling, assessment of the wave climate in various geographical areas, assessment of the wave/wind energy, data assimilation, climate change impacts.
Invited Speakers
Professor Peter Troch is Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering an Director of the Coastal Engineering laboratory at Ghent University. He is coordinator of the design and construction of the new “Coastal and Ocean wave Basin” at Ostend Science Park. He has more than 25 years of academic experience in the field of coastal engineering and open channel flow hydraulics. His research is focusing on wave-induced response of coastal structures (wave overtopping, pore pressure propagation, scour protection) , on wave propagation and harbor wave penetration modelling, on wave energy converters (modelling of wake effects), and on eco-hydraulics of vegetated lowland rivers. For his research, he is developing and using physical and numerical modelling and field monitoring at a wide range of locations. Professor Peter Troch is Core Group member and Science Communication Manager of the WECANet COST Action CA17105.
Dr. Vicky Stratigaki is Management Committee Chair of the European COST Action CA17105 entitles “WECANet: A pan-European network for Marine Renewable Energy”. She obtained her PhD degree from Ghent University (Belgium) as PhD Fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO). She has a Master-after-Master in Environmental studies, as well as a Civil Engineering degree, both obtained at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. In 2020 she has been awarded an FWO Senior Postdoctoral Fellowship for experimental and numerical research in offshore floating and moored structures and offshore renewable energy infrastructure. Her focus is Blue Growth, Blue Energy and Blue Economy.
Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC), Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, Portugal
Dr. Mariana Bernardino is the Leader of the Group of Marine Environment from Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC), University of Lisbon, Portugal. Having a PhD in Physics (Meteorology) awarded by the University of Lisbon in 2004, she worked as a researcher in several Portuguese state Institutes as Hydrographical Institute (IH): 2003-2007, Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA): (2010-2015) being integrated in several national and international research projects related to wave modelling and to climate change. Dr. Bernardino was responsible for the EC -Earth simulations for CMIP5, performed at IPMA Atmosphere. She also belongs to the to the COWCLIP community. She coordinated various research projects at CENTEC.
