Welcome Message

MDPI Singapore is honored to extend an invitation to its inaugural celebration of International Open Access Week on October 24, 2024, at the distinguished Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre. The event, themed “Community over Commercialisation,” will provide a platform for critical discussions on open scholarship practices that prioritize the interests of the academic community and the public.

We are pleased to host a series of expert presentations exploring key issues such as the impact of commercialization on knowledge access, alternative models for open access publishing, and the role of open scholarship in fostering collaboration and innovation. This event will convene a distinguished audience of scholars, researchers, and academic leaders from across disciplines, offering an exceptional opportunity to engage with thought leaders and advance the conversation on the future of open access.

Bio
Dr. HUANG Wei Min, Associate Professor at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, has over 25 years of R&D experience in shape memory materials, including alloys, polymers, composites, and hybrids. He has published extensively, including two books on shape memory alloys and shape memory polymers. Dr. Huang has reviewed for more than 300 international journals and holds over 50 patents across China, the USA, Singapore, and Europe. He has also founded or co-founded multiple startups in Singapore, China, and Malaysia.

Open Access Facilitates Interdisciplinary Research Initiatives
Bio
Dr Hong Yan is an accomplished plant biologist and biotechnologist who relocated from the United States to Singapore in 1993. Since 1995, he has spearheaded independent R&D projects at the Institute of Molecular Agrobiology (IMA) and Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory (TLL), where he has focused on areas such as horticulture, herbal medicine, plant metabolites, sustainable food, wood, and bioenergy. Over the years, he has secured fundings from various Singapore government agencies and commercial companies, resulting in over 50 peer-reviewed research papers (h-index 28), several book chapters, and 10 patents. Notably, technologies developed under in his group have led to the establishment of two successful biotechnology companies, which he also helped manage. Prior to joining NTU as a full-time faculty member in 2017, Dr Hong served as the Chief Scientific Officer of JOil (S) Pte Ltd, a global leader in the development of Jatropha curcas as a sustainable bioenergy crop. He has published in many open access journals and serves as editor/reviewer for many of them.

Bio
Alistair Freeland initially joined MDPI in February 2006, supporting Dr. Shu-Kun Lin as an editor of the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. In 2008, he graduated from the University of St. Gallen with a degree in Business Administration. From 2008 to 2013 he worked at IBM, with responsibilities in the areas of IT delivery and IT service management. From 2013 to 2019, Alistair served as a member of MDPI's executive team in his capacity as Chief Operating Officer (COO). In 2020, he joined SIX Group, where he played a significant role in developing the digital asset platform SDX (SIX Digital Exchange) as a Senior Product Manager. He also founded the not-for-profit scholarly webcast platform Leadwire. Alistair rejoined MDPI in October 2023. He also holds a degree in Performing Arts from the University of East Anglia and an Executive MBA from the University of St. Gallen.
