Webinar Information

Dry Eye Disease (DED) has gained recognition as a public health problem given its prevalence, morbidity, and cost implications. DED can have a variety of symptoms including blurred vision and ocular pain (dryness, burning aching) and a variety of signs including decreased tear production, corneal epithelial disruption, and rapid tear evaporation. However, it is well known that there is often a discrepancy between symptoms and signs of disease.

The following experts will present and speak:

Associate Professor Anat Galor

Dr. Anat Galor is a cornea and uveitis trained specialist with a dual appointment at the Miami Veterans Affairs (VA) medical center and the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Galor completed an ophthalmology residency at the Cole Eye Cleveland Clinic, a uveitis fellowship at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University, and a cornea and external diseases fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Dr. Galor currently runs the ocular surface program at the Miami VA and has focused her research on understanding mechanisms of pain in dry eye, with an emphasis on studying new diagnostic and treatment modalities. She has lectured and published extensively on how nerve status may underlie the often noted disconnect between dry eye symptoms and signs. This includes individuals with decreased sensation and chronic epithelial abnormalities (neurotrophic phenotype) and individuals with hyper-sensitive nerves and chronic ocular pain with minimal ocular surface abnormalities (neuropathic phenotype). Over the years, she has participated in several dry eye related committees including the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) Dry Eye Workshop (DEWS) II Pain and Sensation Committee and the Dry Eye Awareness Month Congressional Briefing. In addition, she served as President of the Ocular Microbiology and Immunology Group and sits on several educational committees within the Academy of Ophthalmology.

Professor Stephen C. Pflugfelder

Stephen C. Pflugfelder, MD, is professor and holder of the James and Margaret Elkins Chair and director of the Ocular Surface Center in the department of ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine. He specializes in cornea, ocular surface and tear disorders. Dr. Pflugfelder’s research interests include pathogenesis of keratoconjunctivitis sicca and desiccation-induced inflammation and autoimmunity on the ocular surface. He has published more than 340 peer-reviewed articles and numerous book chapters. He is past president of the International Ocular Surface Society and has served on the editorial boards of Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science (associate editor), American Journal of Ophthalmology (associate editor), Scientific Reports, Cornea and The Ocular Surface. He is the Cornea Trustee and President of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). Dr. Pflugfelder received his medical degree at the State University of New York Upstate College of Medicine and completed his ophthalmology residency at the Baylor College of Medicine and cornea fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami.

Associate Professor Jennifer Craig

Jennifer Craig is a therapeutic optometrist and associate professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Auckland, where she heads the Ocular Surface Research Laboratory. She is widely published with over 130 peer-reviewed scientific articles and numerous articles in the professional press. Jennifer presents regularly at research and continuing education conferences, and has received awards in recognition of her teaching and research. She holds a number of adjunct appointments at reputed institutions across the world and has served on several Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society International Workshops including, most recently, as vice-chair of TFOS DEWS II.
