Lorena Saitta was born in Basel, Switzerland. She received the M.Sc. summa cum laude in Mechanical Engineering in 2019 at University of Catania (Italy). She earned the Ph.D. in Materials Science and Technology in 2022, in the Systems, Energy, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering Ph.D. Program at University of Catania (Italy), with a dissertation titled ‘Functional Additive Manufacturing by using Nanostructured Coatings and Electrospinning’. She is currently a fixed term Assistant Professor (RTDA) in Materials Science and Technology at University of Catania. Her research activities focus on multifunctional Additive Manufacturing and advanced polymeric materials, with particular emphasis on Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) sensors, biosensing systems, and innovative platforms for diagnostic applications. Her activity includes the design, fabrication, and characterization of 3D-printed sensing devices, with the aim of developing compact, customizable, and cost-effective solutions for biomedical monitoring and diagnostics. She also investigates the integration of functional materials and advanced manufacturing approaches for the development of smart sensing architectures and application-oriented biomedical devices. Her research further encompasses polymer and fiber-reinforced composite processing and characterization, sustainable and bio-based materials, recyclable thermosets, and circular manufacturing strategies.
