In line with the interests of the Special issue (SI) “Advanced Theoretical and Computational Methods for Complex Materials and Structures”, the present webinars will focus on the theoretical and numerical modeling of heterogeneous materials and structures at different scales. The series of talks will show different results from a large numerical campaign, focusing on enhanced structures and composite materials featuring internal length scales and non-local behaviors, whose response accounts for the effect of the staking sequences, ply orientations, agglomeration of nanoparticles, volume fractions of constituents, and porosity levels.
In addition to fiber-reinforced composites and laminates, the series of talks will discuss about innovative materials and applications, such as functionally graded materials (FGMs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene nanoplatelets, or SMART constituents and applications involving large stroke SMART actuators, piezoelectric sensors, shape memory alloys, magnetostrictive and electrostrictive materials, as well as auxetic components and angle-tow laminates. Among many possible engineering applications (e.g., aerospace components, aircrafts, boat hulls and sails, car bodies, long span roofs, as well as biomedical prostheses, electronic devices, and drones) composite beams and shells with different geometries will be discussed, due to their unique shapes and outstanding mechanical behavior, accounting for their possible size-dependence. In a context where an increased computational demand is required to solve such complicated problems (including large deformation, high gradient, damage, fracture mechanics, vibration, or buckling problems), the webinar will discuss about different high-performing computational strategies and advanced theoretical formulations that could serve as useful tools for design purposes.
