Human Gut Microbiome II

It is well known that humans are colonized by trillions of microorganisms, mainly bacteria, most of which reside in the intestine, forming the so-called gut microbiome. Host-associated microbiomes exert a multitiered impact on physiology, supporting health or vice versa contributing to disease susceptibility and progression. However, despite countless advances in the field, the major microbiome players, their functionalities and variation drivers are not yet fully known. In this context, multi-omics approaches, which integrate 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, shotgun metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and metabolomics, while challenging, offer a unique opportunity to investigate microbiome composition down to the strain level, as well as its functional structure, from the coding sequences to the genes actually transcribed, up to the metabolites produced. Finally yet importantly, the use of animal models can help address key mechanistic questions.

It is therefore a great pleasure and honor to welcome three world-leading experts to join us in today’s webinar, who have made outstanding contributions in the field of the gut microbiome, with particular regard to the diet-microbiome axis, neurodegenerative diseases and multi-omics. They will show recent advances in their labs and highlight significant issues for future research.
