Dr. Silvia Turroni
Department of Pharmacy and Biotechnology, University of Bologna, Italy;
Silvia Turroni is Associate Professor in Chemistry and Biotechnology of Fermentation, at the Department of Pharmacy and Biotechnology, University of Bologna (Bologna, Italy). She graduated in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at the University of Bologna in 2004. She obtained a PhD in Applied Biocatalysis and Industrial Microbiology at the University of Bologna in 2008. Her research activity, documented by >155 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and >125 participations in national and international congresses (of which >60 as invited speaker), is mainly focused on the characterization of the compositional and functional structure of the human gut microbiome, and its impact on human health.

On Monday, 7 November 2022, MDPI and the Journal Genes organized the 3rd Webinar of the Genes series, entitled “Human Gut Microbiome II”. This online seminar was chaired by Dr. Silvia Turroni from the Department of Pharmacy and Biotechnology, University of Bologna, Italy.
First, Prof. Dr. Antonio Paoli reviewed the features of a ketogenic diet, the physiology and biochemistry of ketosis, and the effects of such a diet on human physiology, including of course the gut microbiome. Next, Dr. Ayse Demirkan showed the path (and inherent difficulties) to personalized precision medicine through data-driven analysis, and her latest ground-breaking gut microbiome projects. Finally, Prof. Dr. Ana Cristina Calvo accompanied us in the complexity of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, discussing the possible contribution of the gut microbiome in the different stages of the disease. Speaker presentations were followed by Q&A sessions moderated by the chair.
