Gut microbiota including bacteria, fungi, viruses and archea plays a central role in the pathophysiology of the diseases in the gastrointestinal tract and beyond GI tract. Many chronic diseases originate from distorted gut microbiota composition (dysbiosis). The main function of gut microbiota includes regulation of host physiology (regulation of immune system, protection of intestinal barrier, regulation of gut motility and participation in the digestion of food), diverse metabolic functions and regulation of gut-brain barrier. The communication between the gut microbiota and their diverse metabolits and human body systems regulate physiological aspects of health and disease. For treatment purposes, the gut microbiota may be modulated by dietary interventions, pre- and probiotic and fecal microbiota transfer.
The webinar focuses on the recent development in the understanding of the gut microbial dysbiosis in the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal diseases.
