Following the outstanding success of its first edition, the 2nd International Online Conference on Environments (IOCE 2027) returns on 2–4 March 2027, bringing together researchers worldwide to share cutting-edge insights on today’s most pressing environmental challenges.

We are pleased to announce the 2nd International Online Conference on Environments (IOCE 2027)—Resources, Ecosystem services, Quality of life for humans and all species, which will be held online on 2–4 March, 2027, and promoted by the open access MDPI journal Environments (ISSN: 2076-3298, Impact Factor: 4.3 (2025)).
IOCE 2026: The successful 1st International Online Conference on Environments in March 2026 is the result of the joint commitment of a very large number of worldwide scholars, all contributing to a deeper environmental understanding of resource availability and management. The common goal is to develop an appropriate policy to prevent and decrease the environmental impacts, thereby ensuring the sustainability and quality of life to all species, including humans, in the different environments that constitute their habitats.
IOCE 2027, Biodiverse Environments, sectors and processes: The next International Online Conference on Environments will focus on selected environments (urban vs. rural, islands, mountains, forests and wetlands, agricultural systems, marine and freshwater ecosystems, species habitats) and specific activity sectors (mining, mobility, trade, energy resources, food chain, waste management), by means of innovative transition processes to sustainable resource conversion and use (circular economy in production and consumption, resource use efficiency, sustainable policy-making; awareness of impacts; alternatives to unlimited growth). In so doing, biodiverse environments, activity sectors and innovative transitions may become the structures and at the same time the tools for increased quality of life of all species.
Collaboration, not competition: Integrated management of economic processes, by means of multiple assessment tools and full awareness of impacts, as well as collaboration among policy-makers, stakeholders and scientists, may help the transition from an unlimited growth perspective to a sustainable interaction between humans and the environment, to protect and restore habitats at risk. This will provide increased quality of life worldwide, under a full understanding that it is impossible to ensure human health without also ensuring the health of ecosystems and all other species (One Health).
Innovative environmental science, economy and society patterns: The six sessions around which the Conference is organized call for both conceptual and applied studies and evaluations to be the starting points for innovative scientific, technological, economic, and social experiences and policy strategies. The IOCE 2027 aims at implementing, once again, a deep dialogue and research result sharing among scientists, for appropriate valuation of ecosystem services and proposals of nature-based pathways in human activities.
The following sessions will take place at the conference:
S1. Urban systems vs rural and forest surroundings: urban biodiversity; growth of urban population; increased demand for food, energy and materials; climate change and heat waves; circular economy in production and consumption.
S2. Marine and terrestrial ecosystems: islands, mountains, forests and wetlands; arable land, freshwater and runoff; environmental impacts of urbanization, exploitation, trade, and tourism.
S3. Agricultural systems: food chain; human and animal health; ecosystem services linked to agriculture.
S4. Water scarcity and recovery: urban, industrial and agricultural waste and wastewater; bioenergy and bioproducts from waste.
S5. This mine is mine: increased mining; conflicts for rare minerals and energy resources; impacts of mining on water, soil, biodiversity, health; transition to sustainable energy resources.
S6. Worldwide mobility: marine, land and air traffic; impacts of increased mobility on energy and material demand.
This conference will be organized as an online event in order to enable participation from all over the world, with no restrictions related to travel effort and expenditure. Department of Medicine, Surgery and Dentistry “Scuola Medica Salernitana”, University of Salerno, Baronissi, Italy; Dr. Marco Casazza is a physicist specializing in applied physics for life sciences, environmental sciences, and cultural heritage. He earned his degree in Physics from the University of Turin, completed a Specialization in Health Physics, and obtained an international PhD in Environment, Resources, and Sustainable Development from the University of Naples “Parthenope.” He is currently a Tenure-Track Researcher at the University of Salerno and holds the Italian National Scientific Qualification as Associate Professor in Physics for Life Sciences, Environment, and Cultural Heritage. His research focuses on environmental monitoring and modelling, atmospheric aerosol pollution, resource flow analysis, and vibroacoustic characterization of cultural heritage. He has contributed to the development of innovative environmental measurement technologies, including advanced seismometers and the patented PLUDIX microwave pluvio-disdrometer. Dr. Casazza teaches physics applied to medicine and has held academic positions and visiting appointments at several Italian and international universities. He has received international awards, organized scientific conferences, and serves in editorial roles for international journals, including Frontiers in Environmental Science and Frontiers in Sustainable Cities.
