Chief author of Chan’s Practical Geriatrics (1st–5th editions), translated into Chinese in collaboration with Peking Union Medical College and recommended as a national training textbook by the Vice Health Minister, Ministry of Health, China. Author of 180 peer-reviewed publications, including work in the New England Journal of Medicine and Lancet series, and editorial board member of several geriatrics and ageing journals.
Has delivered keynote and major presentations at national and international conferences across China, the USA, Asia-Pacific, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand. Has trained over 80 local geriatricians and 80 international healthcare professionals and collaborated with institutions including Cambridge Addenbrooke Hospital and Tsinghua University.
Obtained $10 million in research grants, including five NHMRC project grants and one MRFF grant. Research interests include Parkinson’s disease, vascular dementia, AI and digital technology in aged care, falls, outreach services and telemedicine. Has led major developments in aged care, telemedicine, stroke, Parkinson’s and geriatric services.

Prof. Dr. Maria Wittmann is Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President Medical Scientific Affairs at B. Braun Hospital Care. A board-certified anesthesiologist, intensivist, and pain specialist, she spent more than two decades at the University Hospital Bonn, where she served as Senior Physician, Head of Clinical Research, and Head of Education. Her work focuses on clinical research, patient safety, perioperative medicine, intensive care, and the translation of scientific evidence into clinical practice and MedTech innovation. As Adjunct Professor at the University of Bonn, she remains actively engaged in research and education, with a strong commitment to improving patient outcomes through interdisciplinary collaboration.

Professor Roger Thomas, MD, PhD, CCFP, FCFP, MRCGP, is an Emeritus Professor of Family Medicine, University of Calgary. Education: Queen Elizabeth’s School, 1952–60, High Barnet, Hertfordshire. BA (Honours), University of Cambridge (Economics), PhD, Yale University (Sociology), MD, McMaster University. He has 183 peer-reviewed publications, 108 conference presentations with abstracts, and is the first author of six Cochrane systematic reviews. Commissioned WHO systematic review of yellow fever vaccine safety. Editor and author of 3 chapters in Medications for Older Persons: Benefits, Harms, Evidence. Elsevier publishers, November 2025. Chapters in three books and encyclopedias. His research interests are systematic reviews and meta-analyses; polypharmacy; potentially inappropriate medications; potential prescribing omissions and adverse drug events in seniors; vaccine effectiveness; increasing vaccine rates; influenza; pneumococcal infections; interventions in schools and families to prevent adolescents starting smoking; sports injuries and concussions; reducing infections and biofilm infections in hospitals and nursing homes. Cohort study of 437,000 admissions and readmissions of patients 65 and older in the four acute-care Calgary hospitals for inappropriate medications, prescribing omissions, adverse events, predictors of readmission, interventions to prevent readmissions, and subsequent mortality. I am an Associate Professor of Stroke and Geriatric Medicine at Cardiff University and an Honorary Consultant Stroke, Geriatric and general Physician for the Aneurin Bevan Health Board. I work half time in the NHS and half in academia. I am on the specialist register for General Internal and Geriatric Medicine (GMC 4112958). I have authored over 150 academic papers and books, including a chapter in the upcoming edition of Brocklehurst's textbook of geriatric medicine and gerontology. I present regularly at national and international conferences. I have secured over £5 Million in competitive research funding from all the major UK funders
I graduated in Medicine from University College London, followed by basic training across the UK and New Zealand, Following my PhD at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in Diabetes in the Older Person. I completed my specialist training in Cambridge and Glasgow. I have been a Consultant Physician since 2007. My personal and academic interest has culminated in a tertiary referral service for cardiovascular management of the complex stroke patient.
