The 5th Sustainable Publishing Forum: Open Science, The Next Transition

Building an Open, Sustainable, and Trusted Research Ecosystem

11 - 12 March 2027
Toronto, Canada
Welcome from the Topical Advisory Board

Dear Colleagues,

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 5th Sustainable Publishing Forum: Open Science, The Next Transition (SPF 2027), taking place in Toronto, Canada, on 11–12 March 2027.

Building on the success of our previous forums, this year marks an important milestone as we bring the Sustainable Publishing Forum to North America for the first time. We look forward to welcoming colleagues from across the research and scholarly publishing communities for two days of meaningful discussions, knowledge exchange, and collaboration.

The scholarly publishing landscape continues to evolve, presenting new opportunities and challenges for researchers, publishers, institutions, and policymakers alike. As we navigate advances in artificial intelligence, evolving approaches to research assessment, and growing expectations around transparency and research integrity, open dialogue and collaboration across our community are more important than ever.

SPF 2027 will bring together librarians, researchers, publishers, research administrators, and policy leaders to explore these developments and their implications for the future of scholarly communication. Through thought-provoking presentations and interactive discussions, we aim to exchange perspectives, share practical experiences, and identify opportunities to advance open science and build a more transparent, trustworthy, and sustainable research ecosystem.

Hosting this inaugural North American edition in Toronto provides an opportunity to strengthen connections across the region while fostering international collaboration. We hope this forum will serve as a platform for new ideas, meaningful partnerships, and continued dialogue among the many stakeholders shaping the future of scholarly publishing.

On behalf of MDPI, we warmly invite you to join us in Toronto. We look forward to welcoming you and to the valuable perspectives and contributions you will bring to SPF 2027.

Sincerely,

The Topical Advisory Board

Center for Open Science (COS);David Mellor, PhD, works on the policy and incentive programs at the Center for Open Science (COS), which involves both grassroots and institutional efforts to include open science in research. These require implementing the Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) Guidelines, preregistration, Registered Reports, and signaling adherence to best practices with badges. Updated in 2025, the TOP Guidelines provide a framework for researchers and policy makers to maximize the verifiability of empirical research claims. Mellor received his PhD in Ecology and Evolution from Rutgers University. As Director of Advising in the Division of Life Sciences at Rutgers University, he supported undergraduate research and education. At Virginia Tech, Mellor investigated the relationships between land managers and volunteer scientists contributing to authentic scientific knowledge and land use decisions. His research interests have covered the behavioral ecology of cichlid fish, citizen science, and reproducibility.
