Toronto is the provincial capital of Ontario, and the most populated city in Canada, with close to three million people.
Situated on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario, the city is the fourth largest in all of North America. The region was initially home to Iroquois and later Wyandot (Huron) peoples. Well into the 19th century, it formed its place as a cultural and economic highlight of Canada.
Notably, more than half of Toronto’s residents were born outside of the country, and over 80 ethnic communities have a presence in the city. The Greater Toronto Area is known as the “Golden Horseshoe”, and the scenic Niagara Falls is a close-by destination.
While the Aga Khan Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario, and Royal Ontario Museum make for great excursions, the CN tower, at above 500 meters tall, has a glass elevator (and floor!) and revolving restaurant. Additionally, the Hockey Hall of Fame and Old City Hall give glimpses into the city’s history, and Toronto City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square are must-sees for the architecture and skating rink in the winter.
From the Beaches to the Distillery District and beyond, Toronto is well worth the exploration!
