The world is facing increasing energy and environmental challenges. This webinar explores modern and new techniques to support the transition to clean energy systems via applications of smart energy. The seminar will include 2 keynote talks that cover applied AI on energy systems and advanced modeling and simulation of hybrid energy systems.

The webinar welcomes participants from academia, industry, and governmental organizations.

Dr. Maurizio Repetto

Dr. Maurizio Repetto

Department of Energy “Galileo Ferraris”, Politecnico di Torino, Italy;
Maurizio Repetto (Genova, Italy, 1960) received his Master and Ph. D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Genova. Since year 2000 is full professor of Principle of Electrical Engineering at the Department of Energy "Galileo Ferraris" of the Politecnico di Torino. From 2013 to 2017, Honorary Professor in the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. In 2018 visiting researcher at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa, Canada. From October 2015 to September 2018 Coordinator of the Electrical Engineering curriculum at the Politecnico di Torino. Since October 2018 he is elected member for Europe in the Board of the International Compumag Society. In February 2019 has been selected as expert for the Horizontal Working Group (HWG) on 100% Renewable Energy Districts of the of the Renewable Heating and Cooling (RHC) European Platform. Since July 2020, designated as Alternate Representative for Italy in the Executive Committee of the International Energy Agency Implementing Agreement on District Heating & Cooling, including Combined Heat and Power (IEA DHC-TCP). His research and consulting activity are focused on the numerical analysis of electromagnetic fields, on the modelling of magnetic materials, on the optimisation applied to the design of industrial devices and on the simulation and optimization of complex and hybrid energy systems with integration of renewable energy sources. He is author of 239 publications and of five patents. Bibliometrics, listed in the major research databases (Scopus – accessed March 24th, 2024), attribute more than 2800 citations (h-index 28).

Dr. Hossam A. Gabbar

Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Ontario Tech University, Oshawa, Canada;
Dr. Gabbar is a full Professor in the Department of Energy and Nuclear Engineering, the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, at Ontario Tech University (UOIT), where he has established the Energy Safety and Control Lab (ESCL), Smart Energy Systems Lab, and Advanced Plasma Engineering Lab. He is the recipient of the Senior Research Excellence Aware for 2016, UOIT. He is recognized among the top 2% of worldwide scientists with high citation in the area of energy. He is a Fellow IET (FIET) and a Distinguished Lecturer – IEEE NPSS on Nuclear-Renewable Hybrid Energy Systems and Plasma-based Waste-to-Energy. He is leading national and international research in the areas of smart energy grids, energy safety and control systems, and waste-to-energy using advanced plasma technologies. Dr. Gabbar obtained his B.Sc. degree in 1988 with first class of honor from the Faculty of Engineering, Alexandria University (Egypt). In 2001, he obtained his Ph.D. degree from Okayama University (Japan). From 2001 till 2004, he joined Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan), as a research associate. From 2004 till 2008, he joined Okayama University (Japan) as an Associate Professor, in the Division of Industrial Innovation Sciences. From 2007 till 2008, he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Toronto. He also worked as process control, safety, and automation specialist in energy and oil & gas industries. Dr. Gabbar has more than 270 publications, including patents, books / chapters, journal and conference papers.

The webinar addressed key challenges related to the energy transition and integration of clean energy technologies and how data analysis and AI techniques could be used to integrate renewable energy systems in different applications. Integrated modeling and simulation approaches are used to evaluate energy transition scenarios and applications on micro energy grids, transportation electrification, energy-water networks, marine, and community infrastructures.
