16th Sensors Webinar

Wearable Sensors for Monitoring Athletic and Clinical Cohorts

We are delighted to welcome you to participate in the webinar, entitled "Wearable Sensors for Monitoring Athletic and Clinical Cohorts". This webinar will provide an overview of current wearable monitoring systems that enable continuous and non-invasive detection of physiological (biosignals) and biomechanical (kinetic, kinematic) data. We will introduce two leading researchers who will discuss the use of wearable technologies for measuring running-related loads and monitoring patients with low back pain. These presentations will address some of the recent advances, technologies and applications in the field of wearable sensors for athletic and clinical cohorts. We will wrap up with an engaging discussion about the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for users of wearable sensor technologies.

I look forward to welcoming you and “meeting” with you online at the webinar. I hope you will enjoy the inspiring and exciting speeches.

Introduction
Bio
Associate Professor Adam Bryant (PhD) is a biomechanist and leader in musculoskeletal research, particularly in the field of knee and lower limb biomechanics. Adam’s research has leveraged portable and wearable sensor technology to advance the understanding of human movement and biomechanics in healthy and clinical cohorts. He has published more than 140 peer-reviewed journal articles and has received funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council, Australian Research Council, and the Medical Research Future Fund. Adam is the former Director of Research (Melbourne School of Health Sciences) and is the Head of the Sports Medicine stream in the Centre for Health Exercise, and Sports Medicine (CHESM) at the University of Melbourne (Australia). He teaches a subject in the Master of Rehabilitation Science program (‘Innovations and Emerging Technology’) that is designed to help post-graduate students develop an understanding of the processes involved in integrating innovative and emerging technologies into their clinical practice to provide information that is measurable and meaningful to their patients.

Keynote Speakers

The University of Melbourne, Australia

Introduction
Bio
Dr Mark Merolli (Physiotherapist) is a digital health technology expert. He is an academic at the University of Melbourne (Australia), and a practicing clinician in musculoskeletal and sports practice. Mark is one of the few internationally recognized, dual-credentialled Physiotherapist-Health Informaticians. He is a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Digital Health and a Certified Health Informatician (Australasia). Mark combines his clinical background with expert knowledge and experience with digital health and informatics. He teaches in the Doctor of Physiotherapy program at the University and is a researcher within the Centre for Health Exercise, and Sports Medicine (CHESM).

RMIT University, Melbourne

Introduction
Bio
Dr Adrian Pranata is a Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist and the Program Manager of the Master of Physiotherapy at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Pranata's research integrates technology in physiotherapy, specifically in the management of musculoskeletal pain, to enhance value-based care. His innovative work focuses on the application of Artificial Intelligence, robotics, and novel biomechanical analyses, particularly targeting low back pain. With contributions to peer-reviewed journals and involvement in international academic forums, Dr. Pranata aspires to lead and inspire in the intersection of technology and physiotherapy, advancing the field towards more effective and technologically informed practices.

Webinar Recording

During this webinar Adam, Mark and Adrian presented an overview of the current research landscape around wearable sensors for monitoring athletic and clinical cohorts. Wearables were identified as a digital health priority area, and the different types of sensor technologies were described. Detailed information pertaining to the research and clinical use ofwearable sensors for measuring knee and anterior cruciate ligament loads, running biomechanics and management of low back pain were provided. An insightful series of questions were presented by a number of the 40 attendees.

The webinar was hosted via Zoom and required registration to attend. The full recording can be found below. In order to learn about future webinars, you can sign up to our newsletter by clicking “Subscribe” at the top of the page.
