Established in September 2020, Hainan International College (HIC) of Beijing Sport University (BSU) serves as a key platform for BSU's engagement in the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port and its Sino-foreign cooperative education initiatives in Hainan. In June 2022, the Ministry of Education of China approved the establishment of the Alberta International School of Recreation, Sport and Tourism (AIS), jointly founded by BSU and the University of Alberta, Canada. As China's first non-independent legal entity Sino-foreign cooperative educational institution dedicated to sports, AIS aims to introduce world-class educational resources and cultivate internationally competitive professionals in sport, recreation, and tourism. AIS leverages BSU's strengths in sports science and the academic excellence of the University of Alberta, which ranked 94th in the 2026 QS World University Rankings and 7th globally in sports-related subjects. The School offers two undergraduate programs—Recreational Sports and Tourism Management—and three master's specializations: Sports Humanities and Sociology, Physical Education and Sports Training, and Social Sports Guidance, with a total enrollment of 900 students. AIS adopts an international education model featuring dual enrollment, dual degrees, joint supervision, English-medium instruction, and small-class teaching. Through collaboration among the Hainan Li'an International Education Innovation Pilot Zone, BSU, and the University of Alberta, the School provides students with an international learning experience in Hainan. Its key research areas include outdoor education, sport tourism, wellness tourism, water sports industries, and community health management. AIS aspires to become an internationally influential hub for academic exchange and collaboration in sport and tourism, with distinctive Chinese characteristics.
