Welcome from the Chairs
Dear colleagues,
We are delighted to announce the 5th International Conference of Materials – Advances in Material Innovation, scheduled to take place in Basel, Switzerland, from September 25–27, 2024.
The goal of this conference is to unite leading scientists, researchers, and industry experts worldwide, facilitating the exchange of insights on recent advancements in Materials Characterization, Processing, and Manufacturing. The focus areas include Nanotechnology in Material Sciences and Engineering, Optical, Electrical, and Magnetic Materials, Soft, Biological, and Bio-materials, Fibers, Membranes, and Thin film, Sensing Materials, as well as Materials and devices for energy and solar fuels. Additionally, discussions on the integration of AI and ML in Material research will be featured.
The event is sponsored by MDPI and the open-access journal Materials. Following three successful editions in electronic format, the 2022 conference was held in Barcelona, Spain. We anticipate that the conference will offer attendees a unique opportunity to stay informed about the latest research and to connect with colleagues from around the world.
We invite abstract submissions for posters or short talks aligned with the conference theme, which will be evaluated for potential presentation at the event. Participants in the meeting will have the chance to showcase their work and engage in discussions about their research within a stimulating and collegial environment.

Maryam Tabrizian is a full professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering with a joint appointment with the Faculty of Dentistry and Oral Health Sciences at McGill University. She holds a Canada Research Chair Tier I in Regenerative Medicine and Nanomedicine. She has received many prestigious awards and fellowships including FRQS-Chercheur National, Guggenheim Foundation, Biomaterials Science & Engineering- International, RSC Academy of Sciences, ADEA Leadership Institute, Canadian Academy of Health Sciences Fellowships and James McGill Professorship. Her research focuses on the development of biomimetic materials, nanoplexes with targeting and tracking/imaging capabilities, and lab-on-a-chip devices. She is the Editor-in-Chief of Materials since 2011.
Department of Applied Science and Technology (DISAT), Politecnico di Torino, Turin, Italy – Website
Federico Bella (Torino, 1987) is Full Professor of Chemistry at Politecnico di Torino. In the Electrochemistry Group, he leads the research activities on post-Li batteries, electrochemical nitrogen reduction and hybrid photovoltaics. Due to his important achievements in energy chemistry, he received the “ENI Award” and the “Roberto Piontelli Award” from the President of the Italian Republic. In 2021, he was the recipient of the USERN Prize, awarded among 10000 candidates by a jury of previous Nobel awardees. He is author of more than 100 international publications (h-index 65) and he leads the ERC project SuN2rise, a 1.5 M€ EU grant for redesigning NH3 production process. He has coordinated the Early-Career Division of the Italian Chemical Society and his member of the Editorial Board of cutting-edge journals in the chemistry field, e.g. ChemSusChem and ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering.
Scientific Committee
Prof. Werner Blau is Director of the interdisciplinary Materials Ireland Polymer Research Centre in Trinity College Dublin, which encompasses researchers from the fields of physics, chemistry, engineering, and computer simulation with a substantial track record in technology transfer and collaboration with Irish industry. He is also Research Director of TCD's HEA PRTLI project in Advanced Materials, based in the new Sami Nasr Institute for Advanced Materials. His research interests concentrate on molecular engineering of advanced materials, properties, and applications of responsive molecular and polymeric materials for electronics, optoelectronics, and bio/medical applications and basic materials, processes, and devices for molecular nanoelectronics and bio-nanotechnology. Published over 340 peer-reviewed papers to-date, edited three books and is coauthor of 13 patents/ patent applications. Supervised over 80 postgraduate students and postdoctoral research fellows and numerous undergraduate and summer student projects.
Department of Mechanical Engineering, ISEP - School of Engineering, Porto, Portugal – Website
Raul D.S.G. Campilho currently serves as an Assistant Professor at ISEP, where he teaches in the areas of mechanical engineering. In 2003 he graduated in mechanical engineering at Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), Porto, Portugal. He completed his M.S. degree in 2006 and his Ph.D. in 2009, both in Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP), Porto, Portugal. He is an active researcher in the fields of numerical modelling, finite element methods, cohesive zone models for fracture behaviour, adhesive joint design, manufacturing processes, and automation and robotics.
Dr. Ingo Dierking received his Ph.D. in 1995 from the University of Clausthal in Germany. After employment at the IBM TJ Watson Research Center in the US, working on electronic paper, he joined Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden, as a Humboldt fellow. There, he was appointed docent, before joining the University of Darmstadt in Germany as a lecturer for several years and eventually moving to the University of Manchester in 2002, where he is a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor at the Department of Physics & Astronomy. Dr. Ingo Dierking has published more than 170 scientific papers, as well as several books on the topic of liquid crystal research. He is the 2009 awardee of the Hilsum medal of the British Liquid Crystal Society (BLCS), the 2016 winner of the Samsung Mid-Career Award for Research Excellence of the International Liquid Crystal Society (ILCS) and the 2021 awardee of the Gray medal. Ingo Dierking is the editor of Liquid Crystals Today, the current President of the ILCS and a former Chair of the BLCS. His current research interests are broadly focused on soft-matter systems, with an emphasis on liquid crystals, and LC-based composites with polymers and nanoparticles.

Christian M Julien is a Professor at the Institut de Minéralogie, de Physique des Matériaux et Cosmologie (IMPMC), Sorbonne Université, Paris, France. He completed his Ph.D. studies in Major at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris. His interests include organic cathodes; organic anodes; Lithium batteries; naphtoquinones derivatives; and supercapacitors.

Dr. Milan Kracalik is an associated professor and head of research group Rheology at the Institute of Polymer Science, Johannes Kepler University Linz. His field of expertise covers in particular polymer rheology, polymer composites and nanocomposites, polymer recycling and study of structure-properties relationship in polymer materials. He studied Polymer Technology at the Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic (MSc.: 2000), at Tomas Bata University in Zlin and Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (Ph.D.: 2006). He was post-doc researcher at the Department of Polymer Engineering and Science of the University of Leoben, Austria. Afterwards he worked at the Department Research and Development of the ISOVOLTAIC AG, Austria. He has also lectured on Polymer Technology at several European universities such as Albert Ludwigs University Freiburg, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Chemical Research Centre / Hungarian Academy of Sciences, University of Zagreb and Department of Technical Sciences / Croatian Academy of Sciences and Art.
Prof. Wojciech Kujawski (ORCID: 0000-0001-8020-8108) currently works at Faculty of Chemistry, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland. Since October 2017 - Head of the Department of Physical Chemistry and Physical Chemistry of Polymers. President of Polish Membrane Society (2015-2022). Author and coauthor of over 200 JCR papers (Scopus). His main research interest is related to membrane separation processes (e.g. pervaporation, membrane distillation, thermopervaporation, gas separation, ultra- and nanofiltration), membranes in food processing, ionic liquids for task specific membranes, ion-exchange membranes, bio-polymers, fossil and bio-fuels, bio-energy, as well as the modification and functionalization of polymeric and ceramic membranes. Principal investigator of national and international projects. Coordinator of Emerging Field "Applied polymers, nanomaterials, membranes, and nanocomposites" (2023-2025). He cooperates with several research groups in Armenia, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Finland, Italy, Czech Republic, Lithuania, and Sweden.

Ana Pimentel received the degree in Physics Engineering, the Master degree in Materials Engineering and PhD in nanotechnology and nanoscience from the New University of Lisbon in 2000, 2006 and 2011, respectively. She worked as Postdoc (2012 – 2018) on the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles to be used in nanoelectronics. Currently, she is working as a principal researcher with a focus on Scanning-transmission electron microscopy analyses and on the solution-based synthesis of metal and metal oxides nanostructures. Main scientific interests: Synthesis of metal and metal oxides nanoparticles (ZnO, TiO2, WO3, Ag, Au, …) by microwave assisted hydrothermal method, on glass, cellulose, and cork-based substrates, to be used in different application, such as UV sensors, catalysis, platform for SERS applications, piezoelectricity and as an antibacterial agent.

Antonio Riveiro Rodríguez is an associate professor in the Department of Materials Engineering, Applied Mechanics and Construction (School of Engineering) at the University of Vigo (Spain) where he teaches courses on solid mechanics and laser processing. He received his PhD in Applied Physics (2009) from the University of Vigo and completed postdoctoral stays at the University of Manchester (School of Materials), Imperial College London (Department of Materials), and University of Minho (3B's Research Group in Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics). His research focuses on laser materials processing, mainly for biomedical applications. His research interests also include laser surface engineering, laser synthesis of micro- and nanomaterials, and the synthesis and laser processing of bioactive glasses. He is author/co-author of 100+ peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and national and international patents.

Abdollah Saboori is an Associate Professor of Advanced Materials Processing at the Department of Management and Production Engineering of the Politecnico di Torino. His research deals with the correlation between the properties of metallic materials and additive manufacturing processes. In recent years, his scientific activity has focused on alloys and composites produced by metal additive manufacturing processes. Abdollah Saboori was a visiting PhD student at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, and he received a PhD with honours in Materials Science and Technology at the Politecnico di Torino with a thesis on Metal matrix nanocomposites. He is a co-author of more than 100 scientific papers published in scientific journals and conference proceedings.
Thin Films and Interfaces Group, Paul Scherrer Institut, Villigen, Switzerland – Website
Dr. Christof Schneider is a physicist and teacher specialized in materials science. He is a senior scientist in the Thin Films and Interfaces Group at the Paul Scherrer Institut, in Villigen, Switzerland and a Private Lecturer at the ETH Zürich working on oxides with strong electronic correlations. His research focuses on multifunctional oxide mostly prepared as thin films (multiferroics, magnetism, ferroelectrics, superconductivity), and oxide materials for renewable energy applications. Dr. Schneider's expertise includes laser ablation, thin film characterization, plasma analysis, mass spectrometry and interface physics. He is actively involved in teaching at the ETH Zurich and has played leadership roles in collaborative research projects. His contributions continue to advance the field of physics and inspires future scientists.

Cambridge Graphene Centre, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK – Website
Andrea C. Ferrari earned a PhD in electrical engineering from Cambridge University, after a Laurea in nuclear engineering from Politecnico di Milano, Italy. He is Professor of nanotechnology and Professorial Fellow of Pembroke College. He founded and directs the Cambridge Graphene Centre and the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Graphene Technology. He chairs the management panel and is the Science and Technology Officer of the European Graphene Flagship. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, Fellow of the Materials Research Society, Fellow of the Institute of Physics, Fellow of the Optical Society and he has been recipient of numerous awards, such as the Royal Society Brian Mercer Award for Innovation, the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award, the Marie Curie Excellence Award, the Philip Leverhulme Prize, The EU-40 Materials Prize. He also received 4 European Research Council Grants. Professor Ferrari’s research interests include nanomaterials growth, modeling, characterization, and devices. In particular, he focuses on graphene, nanotubes, diamond-like carbon, and nanowires for applications in electronics and photonics.
Dr. Milica Radisic is a Professor at the University of Toronto, Canada Research Chair in Organ-on-a-Chip Engineering, and a Senior Scientist at the Toronto General Research Institute. She is internationally renowned for shaping a new field of organ-on-a-chip engineering and developing new biomaterials that promote healing and attenuate scarring. She is Director of the NSERC CREATE Training Program in Organ-on-a-Chip Engineering & Entrepreneurship and Director of Ontario-Quebec Center for Organ-on-a-Chip Engineering. She co-founded the first collaboration centre between a university and the National Research Council of Canada, CRAFT, which is focused on translating organ-on-a-chip devices to viable products. She obtained B.Eng. from McMaster University, and Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the supervision of Prof. Robert Langer. She completed post-doctoral work at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Science and Technology.

Hyunsoo Yang is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS), working on various magnetic materials and devices for spintronics applications. He worked at C&S technology and Intelligent Fiber Optic Systems, California. He received his Doctorate from Stanford University. From 2004-2007, he was at IBM Almaden Research Center. He has authored more than 250 journal articles, given 200 invited presentations, and 20 patents. He was a recipient of the Outstanding Dissertation Award for 2006 from the American Physical Society (GMAG), an IEEE Magnetics Society Distinguished Lecturer for 2019, and the Minister of Science ICT award for 2020.

Bharat Gwalani is an Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at North Carolina State University. He received his Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree from the National Institute of Technology, Jaipur India in 2010, and his Ph.D. from the University of North Texas in 2017, both in Materials Science and Engineering. After his B.E. he worked in the steel industry for three years. Before starting at NC State in 2022, in 2019 Gwalani joined the DOE’s office of science’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and served as a senior materials scientist. His research focuses on mechanistic understanding of material vulnerabilities under extreme environments, deformation-assisted modification of phase transformation pathways, and development and characterization of advanced materials.

Dr. Natarajan Angulakshmi is currently working as a Senior Research Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Gyeongsang National University, South Korea. She also served as a Scientific Researcher at Wuhan University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, P. R. China with Prof. Yinghe Zhou. She was a visiting researcher (with Prof. Claudio Gerbaldi) at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Politecnico de Torino, Italy and with Prof. Edward Bormashenko, Department of Chemistry, Ariel University, Israel. To her credential she was also awarded Brain-Pool Fellowship of South Korea in 2020-2021. Her areas of interest include lithium–sulfur batteries and polymer electrolytes for lithium batteries.

Dr. Arul Manuel Stephan is a Senior Principal Scientist in the electrochemical Power Sources Division of CSIR-Central Electrochemical Research Institute, (India). He undertook a STAJSPS fellowship to work with Prof. Yuria Saito at Osaka National Research Institute (Japan) and served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Chemistry, University of Tulsa (USA) with Prof. Dale-Teeters. He worked at Chonbuk National University (South Korea) as a visiting scientist for two years (with Prof. Kee Suk Nahm) and Politecnico de Torino (Italy) in association with Prof. Roberta Bongiovanni. His current research interests include advanced materials for lithium–sulfur batteries, fast charging of lithium-ion batteries, and solid electrolytes for all-solid-state lithium batteries. He is a recipient of the most cited article award from European Polymer Journal and Best paper award from the Journal “Energy Storage Material”.

In this study, we investigated the behaviour of refilled polymer-stabilised liquid crystals. The polymer network is fabricated by introducing a bifunctional monomer into a nematic or chiral liquid crystal. Polymer networks formed through photo-polymerisation in a thermotropic liquid crystal will follow the self-organised order of the phase which they were formed in. Using the wash-out/refill technique, where a network is formed, the liquid crystal is washed out and leaves a long-range orientationally ordered network for polymerisation in the nematic phase and a helical network for the chiral nematic phase. The behaviour of the refilled LC devices is largely dominated by the interaction between the polymer network and the refilled liquid crystal. This research is focused on the utilising different types of polymer networks, refilled with various liquid crystal phases. Different lyotropic or cholesteric liquid crystals with opposite handedness and varying pitch are refilled into a specific polymer network and the interaction between the network and liquid crystal is characterised by polarising microscopy and spectroscopy. We determined the lower pitch boundary of helical transfer which will cause the selective reflective intensity of the light to surpass the theoretical limit of 50%. The helical polymer network is insufficient to induce a twist grain boundary structure in an achiral SmA phase. Additionally, the nematic polymer network significantly enhances the alignment and orientation of a refilled lyotropic nematic phase, showing excellent dark state positions. When a helical network is formed in a helical thermotropic phase, the helicity can be transferred to the refilled lyotropic phase. |

Disruptive technologies are usually characterised by universal, versatile applications, which change many aspects of our life simultaneously, penetrating every corner of our existence. In order to become disruptive, a new technology needs to offer not incremental, but dramatic, orders of magnitude improvements. The more universal the technology, the better chances it has for broad base success. Significant progress has been made in taking graphene and related layered materials from a state of raw potential to a point where they can revolutionize multiple industries. Innovative Advanced Materials (IAM), targeted by the Innovative Advanced Materials for Europe partnership - IAM4EU, comprise enhanced variants of existing materials, with properties tuned for improved performance in specific applications, or to enable new ones, as well as novel materials enabling improved performance or new applications. The term “innovative” emphasizes the commercial potential and/or refers to modifications or functionalization used to generate IAMs, or to innovative ways to use them. By enabling new, competitive and sustainable products and markets, IAMs are pivotal in achieving the twin goals of the twin green and digital transitions and to boost competitiveness and resilience. I will highlight the journey of innovation initiated with the Graphene Flagship and the Advances in Materials Innovation targeted by IAM4EU. |

Polymer nanocomposites exhibit complex behaviour due to physical and possibly also chemical interactions between individual components (polymer, clay, compatibilizer). Despite research and development of this material class has been done almost over 40 years (Toyota invented first polyamide-clay nanocomposite at 1985), there is still huge potential open due to difficulties coming from nanoparticles dispersion state in different polymers. This includes on one hand control of the compounding process and on other hand a proper characterization of nanoparticles dispersion in final material structure. In this lecture, advances in the mixing technology as well as characterization techniques will be shown on examples of polymer-clay nanocomposites, based on both synthetic and biopolymers. Concerning compounding process, results on laboratory as well on semi-industrial scale will be presented and relevant advantages and disadvantages will be discussed. From the point of view different characterization techniques, conventional (like mechanical and morphological testing) as well as advanced (rheology and spectroscopy performed off- and on-line) measurement approaches will be introduced. |

Typically, in alloy design, thermodynamic modeling is employed to foresee equilibrium states. This is succeeded by thermomechanical treatment to disrupt the equilibrium state, followed by final annealing treatments to achieve a consistently stable state for practical applications. However, this conventional approach considers thermal activation, stress, and chemical stress separately, often resulting in states that may not be the most efficient utilization of precious metallic ingredients. Our research aims to integrate multiple stimuli, such as mechanical stress, chemical potentials, and thermal activation, to create multifunction composite alloys. In this presentation, I will share examples of how this approach was effectively applied in our ongoing research. For example, we utilize an Al-Mg alloy modified with Fe3O4 particles through friction-assisted processing to produce nano-composite materials comprising Al, Al-Fe intermetallics, core-shell particles of Fe+MgO, and Al2O3. These composites exhibit high mechanical strength, ductility, and ferromagnetic characteristics. |

Today, liquid crystals (LCs) are common materials used in the flat screen displays that we see all around us. Yet, these displays only use one type of liquid crystal, the nematic phase, a phase which is characterised solely by orientational order of shape anisotropic molecules. In fact, there is a whole zoo of about 25 different liquid crystal phases that have been discovered over the last 130 years, which all vary in their ordering phenomena, displaying short-range one- and two-dimensional positional order, orthogonal vs tilted phases, different polar subphases, which show paraelectricity, ferro-, ferri-, and antiferroelectricity, all the way to the many different soft crystal materials. The plethora of liquid crystal phases, all separated thermodynamically by 1st or 2nd order phase transitions, allows for a wealth of applications far beyond displays. These liquid crystal phases of novel compounds are generally characterised by texture observation in polarised optical microscopy (POM), which takes much practice and a good amount of expertise. And even then, additional methods are often needed, such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), x-ray diffraction and other more sophisticated methodologies. We show that machine learning can be employed to help researchers in characterising liquid crystals by automating texture characterisation with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and inception algorithms. We discuss the machine learning performance with respect to number of layers, inception blocks, image augmentation etc. for different types of liquid crystal series, (i) chiral nematic-fluid smectic -hexatic smectic, (ii) orthogonal smectic and soft crystal phases, (iii) ferroelectric subphases, and (iv) novel nematic structures, including the much anticipated ferroelectric nematic phase. Accuracies in phase identification lie between 95-100%, depending on the amount of data used, the capacity of the algorithm and the phases involved. We further demonstrate the detection of discontinuous and continuous phase transitions, as well as the localisation of topological defects. Finally, we discuss the determination of liquid crystal physical parameters from electro-optic curves. |

EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL)
The EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL) is only 15 minutes from the city center, making Basel easy and convenient to reach. The Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg airport is jointly operated by France and Switzerland and offers passengers a wide range of dining and shopping options.
From the airport, you can reach the city center of Basel, which is just five kilometers away, quickly and conveniently through a number of options:
- By bus: Bus number 50 connects the Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg airport with the city center seven days a week. It stops in front of the Swiss railway Basel SBB station after a short 15-minute ride. From Basel SBB station, guests can walk along Centralbahnstrasse to reach Peter-Merian-Strasse 80, the conference venue, minutes away.
- By taxi: Taxis are available 24/7 right outside the terminal building and can take you to the city center within minutes.
Zurich Airport (ZRH)
- Direct train connections to Basel
- Approximately 75 minutes travel time to Basel
Frankfurt Airport (FRA)
- Direct train connections to Basel
- Approximately 3 hours travel time to Basel
By train:
Basel is an important interchange and transport hub and, with its three mainline train stations, offers excellent connections to all Swiss cities and major European cities. The Swiss railway Basel SBB station, the French railway (SNCF) station, and the Badische Bahnhof, operated by the German railway company Deutsche Bahn (DB), are all conveniently located in the heart of the city.
Basel’s railway stations enjoy frequent domestic and international services:
- Trains from France arrive at the French regional train platforms in Basel SBB station.
- Guests traveling from Germany can choose whether to get off at Basel SBB station or at Badischer Bahnhof near the Messe Basel exhibition center. From Badischer Bahnhof, guests can take the number 1 Dreirosenbrücke tram line departing every 15 minutes, which stops directly in front of Basel SBB station.
From Basel SBB station, guests can walk along Centralbahnstrasse to reach Peter-Merian-Strasse 80, the conference venue, minutes away.
Basel SBB station is Europe’s largest border station.

- Applicants must have paid for registration and submitted an abstract in order to get a letter of support.
- Applicants must provide us with a scan of their valid, in-date passport that contains a photo of them.
