Welcome from the Chairs
Welcome to the 3rd Electronic Conference on Pharmaceutical Sciences (ECPS 2014). The Conference covers research in key areas of opportunity and challenge in pharmaceutical sciences, including:
- Neglected Diseases
- New Drugs for AIDS/HIV
- New Drugs for Alzheimer’s Disease
- Interferons
- Hit-to-Lead and Lead-to-Drug Candidates
The e-Conference offers you the opportunity to participate in this international, scholarly conference without the concern or expenditure of travel. In addition, participation is free of charge—both for authors and attendees. Furthermore, the e-conference offers you a rapid and direct exchange with the scientific community, and allows you to receive fast, high quality feedback on your latest work.
The last two electronic conferences in Pharmaceutical Sciences were very successful. We hope you will share our enthusiasm and join us in the 3rd edition of this e-conference.
The 3rd Electronic Conference on Pharmaceutical Sciences will be held at www.sciforum.net/conference/ecps-3, on a platform developed by MDPI to organize electronic conferences.
The e-conference proceedings are sponsored by MDPI and the open access scientific journal, Pharmaceuticals. Accepted papers will be published in the proceedings of this e-conference, and selected papers will also be published in Pharmaceuticals.
We hope you will enjoy this 3rd edition and help make it a productive and enjoyable event.

Dr. Marcelo Nieto is a Medicinal Chemist with a vast experience in combinatorial chemistry, natural products and drug design. He has worked in several therapeutic areas such as antiinfectives, opioids and selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). Dr. Nieto received his PhD in chemistry (medicinal chemistry) at the National University of Cordoba, Argentina, followed by a post-doc and a research scientist position at the University of Mississippi where he worked for six years. He moved to SIUE School of Pharmacy in 2006 and he is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. His current research is focussed on the rational design of combinatorial libraries of potential SERMs compounds.
Dr. Derek J. McPhee is the Senior Director of Technology Strategy for Amyris, a company delivering high-performance alternatives to petroleum-based products across a wide range of consumer and industry segments. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the international, open access journal Molecules and the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal Pharmaceuticals.Call for Papers

A. Neglected Diseases
This section is chaired by: Prof. Dr. Peter A. Leggat, AM, from the College of Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences, James Cook University, Townsville Queensland, Australia
The WHO estimates that more than 1 billion people suffer from at least one of the neglected diseases, many of which are neglected tropical diseases. A common element is the need for improved pharmaceuticals and/or better access to these products. This session will seek to highlight recent developments in pharmaceuticals to manage neglected diseases and improving access to these pharmaceuticals. We welcome presentations in these areas as well as in areas where there are evaluations of integrated control programs involving pharmaceutical measures.

D. Interferons
This section is chaired by: Dr. Howard A. Young, from the Center for Cancer Research, The National Cancer Institute at Frederick, Frederick, MD, USA
Since their discovery over 50 years ago, interferons impact cancer research, autoimmunity, and host responses to infection. Also, a huge commercial market developed for interferons because they became critical for treating hepatitis B and C. However, the use of interferons is changing. This session will seek to highlightrecent developments in the clinical use of these drugs (including Type I, II, and III interferons). In addition, we welcome the presentation and discussion of new preclinical models for interferons in order to offer participants a vision into the future of interferons in the clinic.
