Welcome to this online conference, jointly organized by three MDPI hematology journals: Hemato, Hematology Reports, and Thalassemia Reports. Hematology has long been at the forefront of medical innovation, driving breakthroughs in the understanding and treatment of blood-related diseases that affect millions of people worldwide. This dynamic field covers cutting-edge research in hematopoiesis, hemostasis, transfusion medicine, and the molecular mechanisms underlying a spectrum of conditions, ranging from anemia to hematological malignancies.
This conference aims to bring together researchers and scholars to discuss a wide range of topics in hematology. We expect the conference to be a highly interactive forum, providing participants with diverse communication opportunities. It will serve as a platform to cover a broad spectrum of subjects and to publish the latest advances in the field of hematology, which have far-reaching impacts on diseases such as anemia, leukemia, and rare blood diseases. For researchers seeking rapid review and publication of their papers, these three journals are excellent choices for readers and authors due to their efficient peer review and revision processes.
Hematology Reports is the official journal of the Society of Hematologic Oncology Italy (SOHO Italy). The Spanish Society of Hematology and Hemotherapy (SEHH) and the Nuclear Medicine Discovery (Nu.Me.D.) are affiliated with Hemato. The journal Thalassemia Reports publishes recommendations and papers submitted by the Thalassemia International Federation. We look forward to early-career scholars in the society presenting their research and exchanging ideas with their esteemed colleagues.
We anticipate that attendees of this conference will share novel and inspiring ideas through short oral presentations on recent developments and discoveries, providing the wider scientific community with the latest research in the field of hematology.

Prof. Dr. Claudio Cerchione

Prof. Claudio Cerchione works in Hematology Unit of Istituto Romagnolo per lo Studio e la Cura dei Tumori “Dino Amadori” (IRST) IRCCS, where he is Head of Myeloma Clinical and Research Group in the Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Network of Romagna and Principal Investigator of many clinical trials company sponsored and non-company sponsored.
He graduated in medicine with honours from the Medical School at the University Federico II of Naples, Italy (July 2008), with a final thesis in Hematology.
He started his collaboration in Hematology Department, AOU Federico II, Naples, Italy, in 2006, and there he completed with honours his Fellowship in July 2014 and his PhD program in May 2017.
During his Fellowship and PhD studies, Dr. Cerchione studied in detail Hematological malignancies, and his main research topics are Multiple Myeloma and Acute Leukemias.
He has spent international research experiences in Friedrich-Wilhelms Universität, Bonn, Germany, in Universitade de Coimbra, Portugal, collaborating in their clinical and research projects, and in MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, USA, where he has been nominated International Ambassdor of SOHO (Society of Hematologic Oncology).
He is Editor or Reviewer for several highly cited international journals and member of several international societies and co-founder and President of Society of Hematologic Oncology Italy (SOHO Italy).
He is author/co-author of more than one hundred papers in peer-reviewed international journals."
Prof. Dr. Gerardo Musuraca
Hematology Unit, IRCCS Istituto Scientifico Romagnolo per lo Studio dei Tumori (IRST) “Dino Amadori”, Meldola, Italy;
Prof. Gerardo Musuraca earned his degree with honours from the School of Specialization in Hematology at the University of Bologna in 2005, followed by a PhD with honours in Clinical and Experimental Hematology from the same institution in 2009. In early 2014, he completed a Master's in Medical Direction at Bocconi University. Since September 2017, he has held a high specialization in lymphomas. Prof. Musuraca currently serves as Chief of the Hematology and Transplant Unit and Head of the Lymphoma Team at IRCCS IRST "Dino Amadori" in Meldola, Italy, a position he has held since November 2019. He has also been a Contract Professor at the University of Bologna since February 2022, and since May 2022, he serves as a Board Representative of the Specialization School in Hematology at the same university.
Dr. John Tisdale
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NIH), Bethesda, MD, USA;
John Tisdale, MD, is a senior investigator and chief of the Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics Branch of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at NIH. Dr. Tisdale’s research focuses on developing curative strategies for sickle cell disease through transplantation of allogeneic or genetically modified autologous hematopoietic stem cells. He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and trained in internal medicine at Vanderbilt University, where he also completed a chief residency. After a postdoctoral fellowship in NHLBI’s Hematology Branch, he joined the Molecular and Clinical Hematology Branch of NHLBI in 1998.
An elected member to the American Society for Clinical Investigation, Dr. Tisdale is the recipient of the Ernest Beutler Lecture and Prize of the American Society of Hematology. His awards include the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy’s Jerry Mendell Award for Translational Science, the George C. Marshall Innovation Leadership Award, the Public Health Service Outstanding Service Medal, the Annual Bipartisan Congressional Silver Innovator Award, the American College of Physicians’ Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Award #1, and the College of Charleston’s Pre-Medical Society’s Outstanding Service Award in Medicine. He was a finalist of the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal and is one of four clinicians featured in Discovery Channel’s “First in Human” documentary on clinical trials conducted at NIH.
Dr. Tisdale has over 250 publications. He was the Principal Investigator on the gene therapy trial of lovo-cel for SCD that was FDA approved in 2023.
Dr. Alessandro Busca

Alessandro Busca graduated in Medicine from the University of Turin in 1986. He completed his training in Pediatrics and subsequently in Haematology. He received postdoctoral training at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center of Seattle. Since December 2020 he is the Director of Stem Cell Transplant program in Turin, Hospital Citta' della Salute e della Scienza.
Prof. Dr. Hans Knecht

Hans Knecht, Emeritus Professor of Medicine at McGill University, Montreal, is an internationally recognized expert in the molecular pathogenesis of classical Hodgkin’s lymphoma. As a graduate from Zürich Medical School, he got his basic training in hematopathology with the late Karl Lennert, Kiel, in translational hematology with the late Maxime Seligmann, Paris, and in molecular biology with Lukas Kühn, ISREC, Lausanne. He acted as the founding Director of the Swiss Paraplegic Research Institute in Nottwil, initiating early in 2002 the scientific conception and realization of a Translational Research Institute for CHF 40 million. In 2005 he was appointed as Professor of Hematology at the University of Sherbrooke, Canada, in 2014 as Chief of the Division of Hematology at the Jewish General Hospital and as Academic Director of the Division of Hematology, McGill University, Montreal. He solved a > 100 years' old mystery in hematology: the deciphering of the transition from Hodgkin to Reed-Sternberg cells (Leukemia 2009), discovered an in vitro model for the formation of Reed-Sternberg cells in EBV-associated Hodgkin’s lymphoma (Cover caption, Blood 2015) as well as the disruption of the direct 3D telomere-TRF2 interaction through two molecularly disparate mechanisms at the origin of Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg cells (Cover caption, Lab Invest 2017). These substantial advances were possible through combined 3D immuno-FISH nano-technology methods developed by Sabine Mai, GCCRD, UoM, Winnipeg.

Prof. Dr. Partow Kebriaei
Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, Division of Cancer Medicine, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center;
Dr. Partow Kebriaei is a Professor in the Department of Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. She completed her Hematology and Oncology fellowship training at the University of Chicago, and began her tenure at MD Anderson in 2003. Dr. Kebriaei’s research interest is in the area of transplant and cellular therapy for acute leukemia and lymphoma. Dr. Kebriaei has authored numerous reviews, book chapters, and papers, and serves as a reviewer for major hematology and oncology publications. She is an active member of several hematology and oncology professional societies including American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and American Association for Cancer Research.
