Welcome from the Chair
All participants of IECEHS-2 are welcome to submit the extended work to the IJERPH Special Issue "Selected Papers from the 2nd International Electronic Conference on Environmental Health Sciences".
We are pleased to announce, Dr. Agnieszka Gruszecka-Kosowska’s and Dr. Ivan J. Ramírez's papers were awarded the IECEHS-2 Best Paper Awards in 2019.
Dear Colleagues,
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 2nd International Electronic Conference on Environmental Health Sciences.
The first conference in 2018 was a success, with many good papers and good activity. This year we want to develop it even more, with a good selection of topics.
The risk assessment of the effects of environmental pollutants was essential in the 2018 conference. We are also open to this subject this year. In addition, we will have a grander global perspective, and have expanded the main themes to be selected by the authors. The section leads have also been carefully selected. The papers will be subject to a thorough review by the most skilled scientists in our time.
The health of the next generation of great interest to us. This makes it necessary to continuously monitor environmental pollution and the related potential health effects. The information gathered from risk assessment studies is also important for policy makers to identify preventive measures to be adopted at both population and individual levels. The precautionary principle should be the basis of all environmental health science approaches based on newly acquired knowledge, including risk assessments and the definition of strategies to reduce contaminant exposure to humans. This conference creates a unique opportunity to discuss any subject related to environment and health issues. The Chair and the Scientific Committee heartily welcome you and look forward to this second electronic conference on environmental health sciences.
Kind regards,
Prof. Dr. Jon Øyvind Odland
Chair of the 2nd International Electronic Conference on Environmental Health Sciences

B. Climate Change and Reproductive Health
Climate change can have a serious impact on the reproductive health of a population. As we face the development of a global temperature increase described by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) up to 2030 we have a responsibility to provide research and public health strategies to protect the health of both the pregnant women and the next generation. This electronic conference is a perfect opportunity to submit good papers on the topic, and develop connections with other scientists and public health workers. Remember, the problems might come all over the world. They might look different in arctic and tropical areas, but strategies to protect and improve health have the same content wherever you are. So please present your valuable research at this conference. You will also be invited to submit full papers after the conference.

C. Children’s Environmental Health
Children are susceptible to many environmental hazards due to their physiology and behaviour. The first one thousand days of life, the period between conception and a child’s second birthday, are also critical when the foundations for lifelong health and well-being are laid. The environment affects this period of rapid development through many exposure pathways.
Children under five years are disproportionately affected by environmental hazards. According to WHO, in 2012 26 percent of deaths and a quarter of disability-adjusted life years among children under five years were attributable to environmental causes. Children from low income countries and low income communities within countries are also disproportionately affected.
Mitigating climate change and reducing adverse environmental exposures such as improving air and water quality, safely storing hazardous substances, safely disposing of hazardous waste, and making roads safer can prevent poor health. There is a need for environmental justice and strategies to prevent and control diseases and injuries of environmental origin in children.

D. Occupational Health
Occupational health was born over three centuries ago and was the first discipline that focused on primary prevention of disease. The control of physical, chemical and biological agents in the workplace allowed for an exceptional improvement in working conditions, but at the same time emphasized the need to control the risk in living environments. Today there is the awareness that all prevention activities in the workplace must also be aimed at protecting the external environment.
In the last half century, psychosocial problems have required increasing attention from occupational physicians and other health and safety operators. Occupational stress, work organization, contextual factors are held responsible for a share of occupational diseases at least equal to that caused by traditional hazards. Moreover, many aspects of modern society interfere with the quality and quantity of sleep, with family life, with the condition of the individual and his happiness. Occupational health today is increasingly a discipline that deals with working environment with a holistic approach. Health promotion, disability management, respect for the environment are the essential strategies to guarantee health and well-being in the years to come.

E. Environmental Health Equity
To the rationally-minded, it has long been obvious that environment and human health are intricately linked, and that there are vast disparities in individual, community and population environmental health risks. These disparities are heavily influenced by socio-economics, geography, occupation, government policies and many other exacerbating factors such as conflict and climate change. In the last decade or so, funding agencies have recognized the importance of addressing health disparities in improving community and population health, and reducing the economic burden of poor health. In the US, centers of excellence have emerged that include health disparities in their mandates. However, how does this help us achieve environmental health equity, and is this even remotely possible? We can do more to move closer towards environmental health equity through reducing disparities, and we encourage you to share your “lessons learned” through this electronic conference and the challenges researchers and community groups face.

F. Infectious Diseases and Environment
The transmission of pathogens and environment contamination plays the most important role in the epidemiology and transmission of infectious diseases including water- food- and vector-borne diseases, such as cryptosporidiosis, echinococcosis, malaria, dengue, and other bacterial and virus diseases. Water, food and vectors are the most important vehicles and they cause of outbreaks all over the world. It is therefore of huge significance to public health strategies not only in underdeveloped but also in developed countries around the world. It is necessary to investigate and support more equitable approaches to funding and support for research. No doubt that the increase of the highest burden of water-, food and vector-borne related diseases is in areas already susceptible to poverty. The load of infectious diseases is indeed underestimated and underreported in the most counties (developed and underdeveloped world) although Asia, Africa and Latin America countries leads the world in terms of death due to diarrheal diseases and malnutrition. The underdeveloped countries suffers poverty, weak institutional infrastructure, political conflict and its populations are illiterate and practice poor hygiene. The world should unite and put the welfare of their populations as a priority in their political agendas. Clearly, strategies for affecting public health must be adapted to individual regions and their controlling conditions including local environment, available resources, economic and sanitation status. It is useful to provide baseline information on microbial quality during site selection and this baseline information should also be used to measure the changes in the environment to alert potential risks. Consistent and reliable data should lead to better understanding of the occurrence, transport, and fate of infectious diseases pathogens, their epidemiological and clinical relevance for humans and animals and the environment.

G. Global Health
We live in a complex, interconnected world. Some of the major challenges facing humanity today revolve around equity and equality, universal access to health care, communicable diseases and the increase of non-communicable diseases and how the climate change affect humans, animals and agriculture worldwide. Our ability to address these rests on knowledge and awareness that can help us design new tools to investigate and guide policies and guidelines. The 2nd International Electronic Conference on Environmental Health Sciences invites you to participate and share knowledge and practice, which will allow us to make positive contributions to great challenges in health, all over the world.
