Welcome from the Chair
Dear Colleagues,
It is a great pleasure to announce the upcoming conference “The 1st International Electronic Conference on Land —Towards Land System Science”, to take place virtually on 17—19 May 2022.
Conference topics we intend to address are the philosophy and key (inter- and transdisciplinary) methodological approaches of land system sciences. We want to shed a light on advances in key research areas, such as land use and land use planning, modeling from ecosystem to landscape and global scales, scaling effects, impacts of global and climate change on land systems and their resilience, global trends, such as urbanization and biodiversity losses and integrative approaches connected with the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the Aichi Targets and the Paris Agreement. Instruments, such as the European Landscape Convention, and their relevance for protecting and restoring cultural landscapes, the natural heritage and diversity of land systems are expected to be discussed. Other relevant governance instruments and governance mixes that translate land system science outputs into policies and conventions will be debated regarding their efficiency and success and regarding how to further develop them, for instance, in the light of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and its expected outcomes and impacts.
This meeting aims to bring together the LAND community in its widest sense to discuss these latest advances, with sessions on land system science advances and their societal relevance chaired by leading researchers from across the globe.
In the interests of safety, given the present COVID-19 situation, we have decided to bring the conference to a fully online format. The conference will proceed on the same dates with the same fantastic speakers.
Importantly, we aim to select a high number of oral presentations from early-stage researchers, from their submitted abstracts.
We look forward to seeing you online!
IECL2022 Chair
Prof. Dr. Christine Fürst is the Editor-in-Chief of Land. She is the professor for Sustainable Landscape Development, Martin-Luther University Halle, Germany. Her main research interests currently lie in integrative landscape modeling and impact assessment by means of a system of systems and in participatory decision processes in urban and regional spatial planning. Her regional research focus lies beyond Europe, in West Africa and Latin America. |

SESSION A. Land Systems and Global Change
Land systems are complex social-ecological systems composed of interacting social and biological actors and terrestrial environments and the feedbacks among these components that shape the dynamics of Earth’s land surface across scales, from local landscapes to global commodity chains. We invite authors to submit articles to this session which will help to advance scientific and applied understanding of the functioning and dynamics of land systems, as well as the development of new scientific methods and governance tools that help translate knowledge into action.

SESSION G. Landscapes and Societal Challenges
The present landscape is a mirror of the society, its historical development and present state. It reflects the constant diversity of socioeconomic and political changes. On the other hand, humans heavily change the landscape in many places on Earth. Landscape has many faces that range from natural to cultural landscape to cityscape. This session welcomes a wide range of contributions that deal with the relationship between the transformations of landscape and societies in different countries and regions, and in various spatial and temporal dimensions. We are also looking for contributions that deal with methodological issues around studying the relationship between landscapes and society. We also expect papers which identify the current challenges regarding landscapes and society, as well as contributions with a focus on finding solutions to contemporary problems in this field.

SESSION H. Renewable Energy and Land Use
As the climate-changing effects of traditional energy consumption become more pronounced, renewable energy becomes increasingly essential in meeting electricity demands and mitigating carbon emissions. However, the development and utilization of renewable energy resources, including hydro, solar, wind, bioenergy, etc., are closely related to land use and land cover. This section will focus on a wide range of topics related to the interactions between renewable energy and land use in different countries and regions, with the intention of developing our understanding on the land-use requirements of different renewable energy technologies and how land-use restrictions may influence the development of renewable energy in the future.

SESSION I. Ecosystem Services Science for Applications in Planning and Decision Making
Ecosystem services (ES) science has shown enormous progress in recent decades regarding the further development of the conceptual base, ES categorisation systems, indicators and respective methods, models and data for the quantification of ES supply and demand. There has been a wealth of publications on the assessment of ES, which demonstrates the interest in the concept and its potential in landscape assessments. Therefore, it is now time to implement these promising scientific outcomes in the various public and private sectors, and to ask: how can we further integrate ES science in planning and environmental management?
We invite speakers to share their experience on the science–-decision making interface and thereby jointly develop future strategies on how to continue efforts to support sustainable ES-based decision making.

SESSION F. Women in Land Science
Land has also co-developed a special issue "Women's Special Issue Series: Land System Science" to support this session.
With this Special Issue, we wish to call women in land system sciences (and in disciplines closely related to the field) to contribute their research advances, recent results, and emerging visions and approaches to the LAND journal. Acknowledging that scientific progress is a joint and inclusive effort—which requires gender equity and equity in access to publishing across the global north and south—we invite female researchers from all over the world to contribute to this Special Issue. We call experienced female scientists as well as young female scholars to contribute to bringing our research forward.

SESSION J. Landscapes Disturbance in Global South
Landscape disturbances have been known to cause significant departures in the patterns, structure, and functioning of ecological systems. The different spatial and temporal scales of these disturbance regimes (e.g., fire, agricultural expansion, wind, grazing, drought, insects, deforestation, and urban sprawl) influence the biological responses of ecological systems and the ecosystem services that are derived from them. Changes in ecosystem services, in turn, can negatively impact the livelihoods and well-being of people living in the landscape. The impacts of climate change on landscape disturbance regimes and the ecological integrity of vital ecosystems and their services have been the subject of various studies in the last two centuries, but the increasing rapidity and intensity of these disturbances and their wide-ranging social and economic impacts call for much more integrated research. This is even more critical in the Global South, where the impacts of climate change on landscape disturbance regimes are expected to be severe, and the potential threat to livelihood of the communities exacerbates the prevalence of poverty and displacements. This session seeks not only to examine the state of the art in assessing the nature and impacts of landscape disturbance regimes in the Global South, but also to understand the social–ecological interactions, as well as governance and collaborative processes that are needed to develop holistic mitigation strategies, such as nature-based solutions. The session also seeks to address how best to take the knowledge generated from quantitative landscape change analyses of disturbance regimes into the policy and decision-making processes needed to support resilient communities and livelihoods in the Global South.
