EO&GEO Series: GIS in the Management of Sustainable and Smart Cities

Cities are essential for human living and world development. Over 56% of the world’s population live in cities, and about 80% of global GDP is generated in cities. In the past decades, geographical information science (GIS) has demonstrated a strong capability in spatial and temporal data, methods, tools, applications, and integration with other advanced technologies for achieving smart cities and sustainable development. GIS benefits the management of both natural environments, such as vegetation, water, air, soil, climate, and land, and the built environment, including buildings, infrastructure, and their interactions with human movement and natural environments.

In this webinar, we invite two active researchers in GIScience, remote sensing, and smart cities fields to share their studies about GIS in the management of sustainable and smart cities.

Introduction
Bio
Dr Yongze Song leads a Geospatial Analysis and AI team and developed more than 15 new geospatial models and 8 open-source software with over 100,000 downloads globally for understanding geographical and spatial data. The developed new models and software demonstrate both academic and industrial impacts globally. He is a recipient of more than ten awards at international and national levels, such as the Global Top 10 Young Scientist Award and the Australian National Location Data First Prize. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (RGS), UK, and a Committee Member of the International Association for Mathematical Geosciences (IAMG). He is an Editorial Board Member of 7 reputable international peer-reviewed journals, including GIScience & Remote Sensing, iScience (Cell Press), Annals of GIS, Remote Sensing, Geo-spatial Information Science, etc. He serves as a Chair or Program Committee Member for international conferences held in over 10 countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom, Egypt, Norway, China, France, the United States, Canada, Iran, Vanuatu, and Greece. He was invited to present more than 40 research seminars at universities (e.g., Harvard University, Australian National University, National University of Singapore, Peking University, etc.) and industries globally. Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong SAR

Introduction
Bio
Dr. YOO is a Research Assistant Professor at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He obtained his Ph.D. in the department of urban and environmental engineering from Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), South Korea, in 2022, and my B.E. in the department of urban and environmental engineering from UNIST in 2017. He worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in LSGI from April to September 2022. He was an intern at the Geoinformatics Unit at RIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence Project (AIP), Japan, from January to March 2019. He has published more than 17 SCI papers in the past 5 years. I am currently an Editorial Board Member of the ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. Dr. YOO’s research interests include urban remote sensing, geographic information system, and the use of artificial intelligence to interpret remote sensing images for disaster management and environmental monitoring.

School of Intelligent Systems Engineering, Sun Yat-sen University, China

Introduction
Bio
Linlin You is an Associate Professor at the School of Intelligent Systems Engineering, Sun Yat-Sen University, Shenzhen Campus, Guangdong, China, and also a research affiliate at the Intelligent Transportation System Lab, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, US. He was successfully selected for the provincial youth talent project in Guangzhou. He was a senior postdoc at the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology, and a research fellow at the Architecture and Sustainable Design Pillar of the Singapore University of Technology and Design. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Pavia, his dual master's degree with honors in Software Engineering and Computer Science from the Harbin Institute of Technology and the University of Pavia, respectively, and his BSc in Software Engineering from the Harbin Institute of Technology. His research interests include smart cities, autonomous transportation systems, multi-source data fusion, machine learning, and federated learning. He has over 8 years of interdisciplinary research and project management experience in Asia, Europe, and South America. To date, he has been leading or participating in 6 Smart Cities projects on urban mobility, energy, governance, and planning. In these projects, he managed an international team to develop three main platforms, namely IRMA (Integrated Real-time Mobility Assistant), FMS (Future Mobility Sensing Platform), and IDP (Informed Design Platform). Notably, IDP won the 2018 SG Mark Award, and FMS, as a general platform, is utilized to support multiple projects funded by the Ministry of National Development (SG) and the Federal Highway Administration (US). In addition, he has published more than 50 papers in top peer-reviewed journals and conferences, e.g., IEEE IoT Journal, IEEE Network, IEEE T-ITS, IEEE TKDE, ACM TIST, IEEE BigData, IEEE ICDM, IEEE SCC, etc., and applied over 20 Chinese and American patents.
