Women Physicists in Astrophysics, Cosmology and Particle Physics

Welcome to the Webinar "Women Physicists in Astrophysics, Cosmology and Particle Physics".

This webinar will highlight the Special Issue devoted to this subject and the results presented in it.

In this first webinar, we will host four talks presenting new results and reviews covering different areas of high current interest regarding theoretical and experimental astro- and cosmo-particle physics. The main topics are: 1) Chair Introduction: Women Physicists in Astrophysics, Cosmology and Particle Physics; 2) Dark Matter Sterile Neutrino from Scalar Decays; 3) New Advancements in AdS/CFT (Anti-de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory) in Lower Dimensions; 4) Superconformal Line Defects in Three Dimensions; and 5) Environmental High-Energy Astrophysics in the context of space missions such as LISA, Solar Orbiter and JWST, and its implications for space weather science.

Thus, this webinar offers an updated, current collection of new results, recent progress and reviews, covering different lines of research of high current interest in these highly active fields.

Professor Norma G. Sanchez is Research Director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research, institut national des sciences de l'univers (INSU) PSL-Observatoire de Paris, and the Chalonge de Vega School. Norma conducts research regarding the physics of the universe, theoretical physics, gravitation, black holes, and their interplay with particle physics. Her current projects include the new universe, the universe from large to small scales with inflation, general relativity, quantum field theory, the CMB, keV warm dark matter, black holes, dark energy, and quantum physics at the Planckian and Transplanckian scales.

Dr. Lucia A. Popa is Senior Researcher at the Institute of Space Science, Bucharest, Romania, where she has worked from 2001. She obtained her PhD. at the University of Bucharest Romania (1990) on multiquark clusterization effects in relativistic hadron–hadron interactions. Her active research and fields of expertise cover wide areas in cosmology, the evolution of structures, astroparticle physics, and their modern interplays, especially neutrino masses and their effects from cosmological observations, sterile neutrino dark matter constraints from the analysis of CMB Planck data, as well as the cosmological parameter determinations, lepton asymmetry and inflation reconstruction from cosmological observations.

Professor Yolanda Lozano works at the University of Oviedo, Department of Physics, where she is a Full Professor. She obtained her PhD at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid and worked in post-doctoral positions at Princeton University, the University of Utrecht, Queen Mary University of London (Marie Curie Fellow) and CERN. She has permanently worked at Oviedo since 2001. Her active research and fields of expertise cover wide areas in theoretical physics , mainly in superstring theory and quantum gravity, the gauge/gravity duality, branes, supersymmetric theories , monopole-type solutions and anti-de Sitter solutions.

Professor Silvia Penati works at the University of Milano-Bicocca, where she is a Full Professor in Theoretical Physics and at the INFN, Milano. Her research activity is primarily focused on string theory, supersymmetric quantum field theory, anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory correspondence and its applications. Her main results cover a wide physical area, and she has also used them to test holographic predictions, with supersymmetric Wilson loops/surfaces describing lower dimensional topological defect theories playing a crucial role. Silvia has also worked on two-dimensional conformal field theories, integrable statistical models with defects, nonlinear sigma models, quantum extended supersymmetric spinning particle and supergravity solution generating techniques.

University of Urbino “Carlo Bo”, Urbino and INFN Florence, Italy

Professor Catia Grimani works at the University of Urbino, Italy, where she is a Professor in Experimental Physics, and she works at the INFN-Florence as Experiment Responsable for the ESA LISA Pathfinder and LISA missions. Catia is an astroparticle physicist, with wide expertise in the physics of primary and secondary cosmic rays, in the interstellar and interplanetary media, their sources, pulsar magnetospheres, antimatter search with balloon-borne experiments and the origin of the positron excess. She is also a co-investigator in the Metis coronagraph of the ESA Solar Orbiter mission. She led studies on the interplanetary medium’s role in affecting the performance of instruments placed aboard, and the effects that galactic cosmic rays and solar energetic particles play on board space LISA-like instruments.

On Wednesday, 17 November 2021, MDPI and the Journal Universe organized the 3rd webinar on Universe, entitled "Women Physicists in Astrophysics, Cosmology and Particle Physics".

The introduction was held by the Chair of the webinar, Prof. Dr. Norma G. Sanchez. She is a research director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research, and the Chalonge - de Vega School. She conducts research in the physics of the universe, theoretical physics, gravitation, black holes, and their particle physics interplay. Her current projects are the new universe, the universe from large to small scales with inflation, general relativity, quantum field theory, the CMB, keV Warm Dark Matter, black holes, dark energy, and quantum physics at the Planckian and Transplanckian scales.

The first speaker to quick off this webinar was Prof. Norma G. Sanchez with her presentation "Women Physicists in Astrophysics, Cosmology and Particle Physics".

She was followed by Dr. Lucia A. Popa, with her presentation "Dark Matter Sterile Neutrino from Scalar Decays". She is Senior Researcher at the Institute of Space Science, Bucharest, Romania, where she has worked from 2001. Dr. Popa obtained her PhD at the University of Bucharest Romania.

The third presentation with the title "New Advancements in AdS/CFT in Lower Dimensions" was held by Prof. Yolanda Lozano. She obtained her PhD at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid. Now she works at the University of Oviedo, Department of Physics, where she is a Full Professor.

The fourth presentation was held by Prof. Silvia Penati and its title was "Superconformal Line Defects in 3Dimensions". She works at the University of Milano-Bicocca, where she is a Full Professor in Theoretical Physics and at the INFN, Milano.

She was followed by Prof. Catia Grimani who presented "Environmental high energy astrophysics in the context of space missions as LISA, Solar Orbiter and JWST, and its implications for space weather science". She works at the University of Urbino, Italy, where she is a Professor in Experimental Physics, and she works at the INFN-Florence as Experiment Responsable for the ESA LISA Pathfinder and LISA missions.

The presentations were followed by a Q&A and a discussion, moderated by the Chair Prof. Norma G. Sanchez. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend.
