Welcome from the Chairs
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 4th World Sustainability Forum. The Forum covers research in many areas relating to sustainability and sustainable development, and includes sessions in many important areas:
|
![]() |
Participants in this multidisciplinary conference will have the opportunity to examine, explore and critically engage with issues and advances in these and related areas. We hope to facilitate debates on theoretical and practical investigations, and to allow participants to "make a difference".
A special feature of the Forum is that it is an electronic conference. This type of conference is particularly appropriate and useful for the 4th World Sustainability Forum because research concerned with sustainability and sustainable development is progressing rapidly, while activities in industry, government and academia are simultaneously becoming increasingly globalized. Successful research therefore requires interaction with individuals and groups around the world, demonstrating the need for new types of communication within our community. An electronic conference provides a platform for rapid and direct exchanges about the latest research findings, as well as a possibility for global meetings with no limitations related to traveling. To further remove barriers to "attendance", participation in the Forum as an author or other participant is free of charge. The 4th World Sustainability Forum will be held at www.sciforum.net/conference/wsf-4, on a platform developed by MDPI to organize electronic conferences and sponsored by MDPI and the scientific open access journal Sustainability. Accepted papers will be published in the proceedings of the Forum, and selected papers will be published in Sustainability. I offer my sincere thanks to all attendees, and especially to authors, keynote presenters, members of the Scientific Advisory Committee, session chairs and organizers.
I hope that your participation in the 4th World Sustainability Forum will prove to be interesting, productive and enjoyable. Prof. Dr. Marc A. Rosen

sciforum-002870 | When are Interventions for a More Sustainable Agriculture Successful? Towards an Analytical Framework |
![]() |
Show Abstract |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Today's agriculture both contributes significantly to current environmental, social, and economic problems and also suffers from the consequences of this non-sustainable development. Despite the importance of research at the farm level to tackle these problems, it has often been argued that research and work for sustainable agriculture has to go beyond the farm gate. However, designing and implementing solutions at higher levels makes the collaboration of different stakeholders indispensable. There has already been much work on conditions influencing success or failure of joint action but there has been no research specifically on conditions for the success of collaborative interventions that aim at the improvement of the sustainability of agriculture. Furthermore, much of the existing work is based on the examination of one or few case studies, which makes it difficult to identify overall patterns. To fill this gap, we are conducting a case survey of collaborative interventions aiming at a more sustainable agriculture at the local or regional level in the EU. One crucial step in the case survey method is the design of an analytical or coding scheme. In this paper, we describe how we derived the variables making up our coding scheme. This includes the formulation of a meaningful definition of what actually is a case as well as the operationalization of 'success'. Finally, we give an overview over the resulting coding scheme, containing factors that potentially contribute to or hinder the success of collaborative interventions trying to achieve a more sustainable agriculture.
sciforum-003058 | Calculation of CH4 and CO2 Emission Rate in Kahrizak Landfill Site with Land GEM Mathematical Model | , , | N/A |
Show Abstract |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Emitted gasses from the landfills are one of thesignificant sources of air pollution in Iran. Meanwhile, the reduction, controland recycling of such gasses is of great importance from hygienic and globalperspectives. Kahrizak landfill site has been a dumping place for the past 40years. The average amount of wastes disposed at the site is approximately 7000 Tons per day. The purpose of this study iscalculation CH4 (Methane) and CO2 (Dioxide carbon) emissionsand estimate the carbon reduction potential using the Land GEM 3.02 model. Validationof this model was tested by comparing the model estimates with the methane andCO2 recovery rate compiled from the experimental results of Kahrizak landfill between 1994 and 2004. Based on the model results, theCH4 and CO2 emissions between 1992 and 2012 were determinedand sensitivity analysis was performed for various quantities of the decay rate. Through gas-recovery and extracting energy fromlandfills with 75 percent efficiency, the generation rate of greenhouse gaseswill reduce to around 557,633 tons of CO2 equivalent in Iran.
sciforum-003359 | Urban Sustainability in Arid Climates: Challenges for Antofagasta, Chile | N/A |
Show Abstract |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Urban sustainability is one of the most important challenges for the new century. In arid climates urban development is even more sensitive to resources use and environmental pollution. In northern regions of Chile, mining industry influences urban development policies, resulting in many cases in a lack of legacy on environmental issues. In this paper the case of Antofagasta is studied, considering the following items: water usage, air and soil pollution, climate change, acoustic and light contamination. A critical revision of Antofagasta master plan shows that environmental challenges have to be considered to address sustainable development towards a family-friendly and healthy city, a place where people would like to live and work.
sciforum-001941 | Education for Sustainability: How can Educators Address the Failure of Government? | , | N/A |
Show Abstract |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
In many respects education systems worldwide still contribute more to the obstacles than to solutions in humanity's quest to implement acceptable forms of sustainable living. The same appears to be the case with governments, especially at superregional and national levels. We summarise the evidence suggesting that many governments fall short of their own broadly stated commitments towards sustainability. Their achievements are evaluated in relation to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and currently discussed notions about the forthcoming Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Also, widely advocated transition strategies, in the educational sector and elsewhere, have met with only partial success. Our findings confirm our previous critical assessment of the UN's Decade of Education for Sustainable Development and of the dominant interpretations of sustainable development per se. We describe the extent of the shortfall and offer some explanations for it. In the classroom, efforts to educate for sustainability are dominated by contingencies, norms and possibilities that differ fundamentally from governance in their dynamics and contingencies. It is therefore possible for teachers at all levels to take the initiative in ways that can compensate to some extent for the failures of governments. This possibility is documented by example cases and further expanded conceptually to describe a productive operating space for educators to help prepare learners for the inevitable challenges of the transition. We refer specifically to the goals of making communities more resilient, reducing their ecological overshoot, and maximising their human security. It is the level of community that offers the greatest potential for mitigating the failures of government as well as of education.
sciforum-000050 | Missing Data, Moral Eyesores, and Marginalized People: Opposition to Needle Exchange and Harm Reduction in Drug Policy | N/A |
Show Abstract |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A critical component of "sustainability" is the capacity to manage chronic social problems like addiction. Sociologists, anthropologists, historians, and other social scientists are invested in debates over substance abuse treatment. This study weds those engagements through an overview of past and current critiques of the twelve-step model, primarily Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and evaluation of the efficacy of AA vis-à-vis other addiction therapies, including inpatient rehab centers and individual "sobriety coaches," among others. Though attacked by varying interests, from for-profit recovery services to even religious skeptics, AA remains among the most successful voluntary addiction treatment programs. This paper also questions why certain groups enjoy higher rates of lasting sobriety than others, with particular attention to gender, race, religion, and compulsory-versus-voluntary participation. |
