Abstract:

The aim of this presentation is to show the possible interactions between the understanding of
the concept of information and the experience of beauty and attempts to communicate it. Both
concepts, information and beauty, belong to the category of polysemantic concepts, which
makes the possible interactions between them seem hopelessly complicated. The situation
seems to be even more complicated by the fact that it is impossible to present a comparative
study of something that could be described as the ‘experience of information’ with the
traditionally understood experience of beauty (Scruton). However, the question arises as to
whether a theoretical study would suffice, understood as a kind of attempt to examine the usefulness of
selected (Floridi, Krzanowski, Schroeder) concepts of information in the context of conveying
the experience of beauty. It seems that using Floridi's definition is tempting and, in a way,
appears to be a natural means, but it does cause fundamental problems.

Schroeder's and Krzanowski's approaches seem to be much more troublesome due to their more
fundamental character. However, the attempt to examine the relationship between their
understanding of information and the category of beauty seems much more attractive and
fruitful in relation to these very approaches, especially in cases of such unusual situations of
experiencing beauty as those referred to, for example, in the context of the concept of beauty in
mathematics.
