2nd Agriculture Webinar

Impacts of Pesticides on Soil and Environment

The extensive use of pesticides over the last several decades has highlighted the potential risk posed by pesticides to the soil environment. An increasing proportion of arable soils have been reported to be contaminated with pesticides to varying degrees. Soil contamination with pesticides influences non-target species, including humans, by affecting soil microbial populations, bacterial diversity, nitrogen transformations, soil animals, and soil enzymes, ultimately influencing entire agricultural ecosystems. The research on mechanisms of pesticide effects on non-target organisms and ecosystems is seeing progress. We expect to provide some thought-provoking exchanges through this webinar and inspire more scientific discoveries and solutions to be proposed in the future.

Chair

Institute of Plant Protection, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing, China

Introduction
Bio
Dr. Liu is a professor of the Institute of Plant Protection, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. He obtained his PhD in applied chemistry in 2006 from Tianjin University. He has mainly researched the environmental fate of pesticides, pesticide ecotoxicology, and pesticide pollution prevention and control. In the last 5 years, Dr. Liu has presided over one National Key R&D Program of China, one International (Regional) Cooperation and Exchange Program, a General Program of NSFC, etc. He has published over 80 papers and developed 83 national or agricultural standards. In 2016, he was awarded the “Top Ten Youth” by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. In 2020, he was promoted to the leading talent of agricultural science and talents of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

Invited Speakers

Agro-Environmental Protection Institute, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Tianjin, China

Introduction
Bio
Dr. Geng is an Associate Professor in the Agro-Environmental Protection Institute, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, China. He also serves as a committee member of pesticide residue and environmental safety in the Chinese Society of Plant Protection. Dr. Geng has research interests in pesticide environmental risk assessment and agro-product safety estimation, especially the monitoring and modeling of pesticides in agricultural environments. His original contribution includes evaluating insecticide risk to human health via groundwater consumption and estimating the occurrence, main drivers, and environmental risk of pesticide in agricultural groundwater and surface water in China. His research has been supported by several grants, e.g., the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the sub-project of the National Key Research and Development Program, and the National Project for Agro-product Quality and Safety Risk Assessment.

Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering, Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark

Introduction
Bio
Dr. Zongsu Wei is an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) at the Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering at Aarhus University, Denmark. Prof. Wei received his Ph.D. degree in Environmental Engineering from Ohio State University in 2015. As the Head of the Water Engineering Innovation (WEI) Lab, Prof. Wei has secured more than USD 3.3 million in funding as PI. His research interests are focused on developing sustainable technologies for water treatment and reuse. His diverse works are featured in more than 80 peer-reviewed papers, among which 17 papers are recognized as ESI 1% Highly Cited Papers and 5 as ESI 0.1% Hot Papers. He also applied for three international patents. Prof. Wei has received numerous awards in recognition of his research and service. Notable among these are Sapere Aude Research Leader, awarded by Independent Research Foundation Denmark; Villum Young Investigator Award (nominated); Best Paper of Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology; and Excellent Reviewer Award from multiple journals. Prof. Wei is currently serving as the Associate Editor for Water Research (Elsevier Publishing), Editor for Water Science and Technology (International Water Association Publishing), and Editorial Board Member for Engineering, Chemosphere, Chinese Chemical Letters, Environmental Science & Ecotechnology, and Carbon Research.
