3rd Antioxidants Webinar
The Role of Peroxiredoxins in Antioxidant Defense and Redox Signaling
Peroxiredoxins are key players in antioxidant protection and redox signalling. Recent research has highlighted their roles in a wide range of physiological and pathological processes as diverse as tumor progression and resistance, metabolic rhythmicity, mitosis, spindle assembly, and DNA replication fidelity. However, numerous questions about their mechanisms of action and how these relate to structural features remain open. The webminars in this session, delivered by two leading researchers, will address novel exciting developments in two complementary areas of research on Peroxiredoxins: structural studies that yield insight on Peroxiredoxins’ kinetics and mode of action, and cellular studies that illuminate Peroxiredoxin’s functional roles in vivo.

Armindo José Alves da Silva Salvador graduated in Biochemistry by the University of Lisbon in 1988, and obtained a Ph. D. in Biochemistry in 1997 from the same University under Dr. Ruy Pinto. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the Institute for Chemical and Biological Technology (Portugal) (1997-8, Membrane Biophysics, Dr. Eurico Melo’s lab), at the University of Michigan (U.S.A.) (1998-2000, Computational Systems Biology, Dr. Michael Savageau’s lab) and at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) (2002-5, Molecular Systems Biology, Dr. Winchil Vaz’ lab), a research fellow at Pfizer Global Research & Development/The University of Michigan (2000-2) and a visiting scholar at the University of California - Davis (U.S.A.) (2002, Molecular Systems Biology). Since 2005 he leads the Computational and Systems Biology Group at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology - The University of Coimbra. Dr. Armindo Salvador's main research interests are focused on the relationship between function and design in redox signaling and antioxidant protection. He addresses these problems using mathematical models that integrate the current knowledge about the molecular players in these processes to gain insight on systems-level properties. He is the President of the Portuguese Biophysical Society (2021-), and member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Theoretical Biology (2009-).
Invited Speakers
Institute for Biochemistry, Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany
On the 19th September 2018, Bruce Morgan was awarded the certficate of appointment as ‘Professor of Biochemistry’ at the Saarland State Chancellery. He started his new position in Saarbrücken on October 1, 2018. The research of the Morgan group focuses on cellular redox biology, e.g. how changes in the cellular redox species control the physiology and behaviour of cells. Since 2016, Prof. Morgan is Principal Investigator within the DFG-funded Research Training Group IRTG 1830 and he will of course remain a member of this cooperation project between the University of Kaiserslautern, the Saarland University and the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada).

Dr. S. Rahuel-Clermont is research director in the Molecular and Structural Enzymology team of the IMoPA lab at University of Lorraine in Nancy, France. She addresses diverse aspects of the study of enzyme mechanisms, including chemical catalysis, molecular recognition, structural specificity and evolution of catalysis. She has a long-standing interest in the study of enzymes which depend on the complex chemistry of sulfur, and participate in a number of critical cellular processes including metabolism, repair, detoxification, and redox regulation via reactive oxygen species (ROS). After a PhD under the direction of Pr Guy Branlant (Nancy) and a postdoc at the Department of biochemistry and molecular biology of the University of California at Riverside (USA), in Pr Michael F. Dunn's lab, she focused her research on the aldehyde dehydrogenase superfamily, before migrating to the sulfur redox enzymology of the Peroxiredoxin/Sulfiredoxin system and yeast Yap1/Orp1/Ybp1 redox signaling system. She develops a molecular enzymology approach rooted in in vitro enzymology including rapid kinetics and global kinetic analyses and simulations, using structure/function studies and analysis of molecular interactions. She is deputy director of the French Society of Biochemistry and Molecular biology, and director of the Biology and Health doctoral program of the University of Lorraine.
