6th Energies Webinar

Seamless Integration of Distributed Energy Resources

The massive integration of distributed energy resources is a differentiating aspect of smart grids. That integration should enable the efficient use of generation, storage, and flexibility distributed resources across the grid. However, the achievement of seamless integration of such resources is complex and still needs significant advances. Solutions should enable the harmonious management of loads as well as storage and generation resources in a competitive environment. The business models and technologic solutions to be used must address the particular characteristics of distributed resources owners and managers, namely the constraints of small size players and the need to provide them with efficient, easy-to-use secure solutions.
The use of artificial intelligence is especially useful in this environment to support such management solutions while dealing with distributed decision making and management, end-user representation, uncertainty, complexity, optimization, users’ preferences, and contextual data.
This webinar will address the current challenges in this field and present advanced models and solutions to cope with the complex nature of the seamless integration of distributed energy resources in smart grids.

She contributes to several scientific and technical committees and working groups. Currently, she is President of ISAP – Intelligent Systems Applications to Power Systems and chairs the Working Group on Intelligent Data Mining and Analysis and the Task Force on Open Datasets of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power and Energy Society (PES).

Invited Speakers

INESC-ID, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Instituto Superior Técnico-IST, Universidade de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal

Introduction
Bio
He graduated as Electrical Engineer from the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto, ISEP) in 2002 (Bachelor) and in 2005 (Licenciate). In December of 2010 he carried out his MSc thesis at ISEP, about "Energy Resources Management in Smart Grids". In April of 2012 he finished his PhD concerning "Virtual Power Players action in electricity Markets". His research interests address several research topics namely: • Virtual power players (VPP): Management structure; Coalitions with generation units using intelligent negotiation and game theory algorithms; Bilateral negotiation between VPPs; Participation in EM; Bilateral negotiation based on LMPs values; •Energy resources management using deterministic and heuristics (Genetic algorithms, Several approaches of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Simulated Annealing (SA), etc) approaches considering the contracts between VPPs and aggregated players; Multi-objective approach considering the cost, GEE emissions, social welfare and the load diagram stability, using the Pareto front and fuzzy data; • Simulation of electricity markets in multi-agent systems, considering the inclusion of VPPs, the complex offers rules, the balancing, day-ahead and the ancillary services markets.
