1st Webinar Series on Geosciences - an Open Access Journal

Geosciences: State of the Art and Future Interdisciplinary Challenges

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, many geoscientists have to stay at home and many academic conferences have been cancelled or postponed. The geosciences cover a wide scope of scientific topics and methodologies, including, notably, field and laboratory studies. These provide a direct connection with society at different contexts, scales and levels.
This webinar is particularly important as scientific advancements from different perspectives and approaches will be crucial to overcoming this pandemic.

Chair: Prof. Dr. Jesús Martínez-Frías

Date & Time: 19 June 2020 11:00 am (CEST) | 5:00am (EDT) | 5:00pm (CST)

Webinar ID: 823 3641 6333

Webinar Secretariat: geosciences.webinar@mdpi.com

The following experts will present and speak:

Prof. Dr. Jesús Martínez-Frías Dr. Anawat Suppasri Prof. Dr. Eng. Elzbieta Bielecka Dr. Joaquín Cortes

Prof. Dr. Jesús Martínez-Frías

Dr. Anawat Suppasri

Prof. Dr. Eng. Elzbieta Bielecka

Dr. Joaquín Cortes

Prof. Jesús Martínez Frías, PhD (Complutense University of Madrid/1986) has enjoyed training and research stays in the UK (University of Leeds), Canada (University of Toronto), Germany (University of Heidelberg), and the USA (University of California). He is currently Scientific Researcher at the Geosciences Institute, IGEO (CSIC-UCM); Honorific Professor at the Bioengeneering and Aerospace Engineering Department of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid; Head of the Research Group of Meteorites and Planetary Geosciences and founder and Director of the Spanish Planetology and Astrobiology Network (REDESPA). He has participated in NASA and ESA missions and in more than 40 projects and scientific campaigns spanning the globe (e.g., including Antarctica, Mauritania, Iceland, and Costa Rica). He has published 11 books and more than 300 scientific articles. He was Vice-Chair of the UNCSTD and Chair of the IUGS Commission on Geoscience Education, Training and Technology Transfer. At present, he is President of the International Association for Geoethics (IAGETH).

Dr. Anawat Suppasri completed his bachelor degree (civil engineering) from Chulalongkorn University in 2005 and master degree (water resource engineering) from Asian Institute of Technology in 2007. He came to Japan and obtained PhD in tsunami engineering from Tohoku University in 2010. After that, he received research grant to continue his research of tsunami risk assessment in Tohoku University. After the 2011 Tohoku tsunami, Tohoku University established the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) in April 2012. He became associate professor at IRIDeS since then. After the 2011 Tohoku tsunami, he took many of visitors and professors from both Japan and oversea to tsunami affected areas. At present, his research focuses on tsunami numerical simulation, tsunami fragility analysis, tsunami warning, tsunami evacuation and disaster mitigation education.

Prof. Elzbieta Bielecka is a full professor at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy at the Military University of Technology, in Warsaw where she heads group on geographic information systems and science. She holds a graduate degree in geodesy and cartography and a PhD in geography form Warsaw University, Poland. She has nearly 40 years of experience in education, research and consulting in the field of GIS and cartography. In her research she focuses on the theoretical issues of GIS, especially data quality and uncertainty, spatial modeling, land cover/land use models, spatial pattern analysis. She is the author of many research publications, consultant in the implementation of GIS in public administration. She was a member of TWG INSPIRE for land cover theme. Currently, she is editor-in-chief of the Geodesy and Cartography, the journal of Polish Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Joaquín Cortés is an Igneous Petrology with experience in Geochemistry, Volcanology and Structural Geology. He completed in 1994 his BSc in Sciences in the University of Chile, obtained the professional qualification as a Geologist and his MSc in Geology in 1996 and his PhD in Earth Sciences from the University of Leeds in 2005. Since 2006 he has been lecturer in those subjects in USA (University at Buffalo) and in the UK (Edinburgh University, Newcastle University). Dr. Joaquín Cortés is currently Senior Lecturer in Geology at Edge Hill University (UK).

Webinar Content

The first Geosciences webinar was held on Friday 19 June 2020 and was chaired by Prof. Dr. Jesús Martínez-Frías, Complutense University of Madrid, Spain. This webinar covered different perspectives and approaches in Geosciences that are crucial to overcoming this pandemic.

Dr. Anawat Suppasri, Tohoku University, Japan, was the first to present his research “Lessons and Findings from the 2018 Sulawesi Tsunami and the 2018 Sunda Strait Tsunami”. Prof. Dr. Eng. Elzbieta Bielecka followed with a presentation on the GIS-based Land Use Change modelling. Dr. Joaquín Cortes was the last speaker and talked of the role of the structural control in the evolution of magmatic plumbing systems.

The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend. The full recording can be found here on Sciforum website.
