Instituto de Carboquímica, CSIC

Introduction
Bio
Edgar Muñoz earned a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Zaragoza in 2000 for his pioneering work on the laser ablation production of carbon nanotubes carried out at the Instituto de Carboquímica (ICB)-CSIC (Spanish National Research Council, CSIC). He joined Ray H. Baughman’s group at Honeywell International (Morristown, NJ), and later at the UTD NanoTech Institute of the University of Texas at Dallas, where he worked on the spinning of super-tough, multifunctional composite carbon nanotube fibers (Nature (2003) 423, 70), on carbon nanotube and V2O5 nanofiber actuators (Nature Materials (2003) 2, 316), on CNT-dispersion and bio-nanocomposite preparation (J. Am. Chem. Soc. (2003) 125, 1770), and on the first reported thin, flexible, conducting, and highly transparent carbon nanotube films fabricated by line patterning (J. Am. Chem. Soc. (2004) 126, 4462).

After returning to the Instituto de Carboquímica (ICB)-CSIC in 2003, his primary research interests are in the fabrication of nanocarbon-based multifunctional materials for sensor applications, and on supramolecular peptide self-assemblies and nanocomposite materials for optoelectronics (transparent electrodes and fluorescent probes), nanocarriers (theranostics, drug delivery), and smart textile applications (this research was highlighted in CSIC Annual Reports from 2016 to 2018).

Dr. E. Muñoz has been a CSIC staff research scientist since 2005. He was Associate Director of ICB-CSIC from 2010 to 2014, and Head of the NanoChemistry Group at ICB-CSIC from 2007 to 2020. Event Committee

Analytical Biosensors Group, Analytical Chemistry Department, Faculty of Sciences, University of Zaragoza

Introduction
Bio
Susana de Marcos began her research career by developing an analytical methodology based on the intrinsic properties of enzymes. The more than 20 years of work that followed have allowed her to gain an in-depth understanding of the mechanisms of enzymatic reactions and develop mathematical models to predict the response of the analyte of interest. This experience, along with her postdoctoral fellowship, led to the development of sensor systems based on the use of the self-indicating properties of enzymes (both intrinsic and extrinsic). The transfer of this knowledge allowed a biosensor prototype to be developed for the determination of peroxides, where Susana authored the invention.

In recent years and within the framework of her latest research projects, the incorporation of nanomaterials into enzymatic determinations has allowed the development of new and more stable and robust colorimetric sensors. Furthermore, her prior knowledge of autoinductive enzymatic reactions has allowed her to become involved in the development of point-of-care sensors based on the digital processing of images obtained using smartphones. Her experience in sensors has led her to sign several research contracts with BSH Electrodomésticos España SA, which has resulted in three patents, one of which is international.

Location and Venue

Barcelona

Barcelona is the capital and largest city of Catalonia and is Spain's second-largest city, with a population of over one and a half million people.

Located on the northeastern Mediterranean coast of Spain, this city has a rich and diverse history, with its roots dating back to Roman times. The fruitful medieval period established Barcelona's position as the economic and political center of the Western Mediterranean. The city's Gothic Quarter bears witness to the splendor enjoyed by the city from the 13th to the 15th centuries.

The 20th century ushered in widespread urban renewal throughout Barcelona, culminating in its landmark Eixample district, which showcases some of Barcelona's most distinctive Catalan art-nouveau, or modernista, buildings. The Catalan Antoni Gaudí, one of the most eminent architects, designed buildings such as La Pedrera, the Casa Batlló, and the Sagrada Família church, which have become world-famous landmarks.

In 1992, Barcelona gained international recognition by hosting the Olympic games, which brought about a massive upturn in its tourism industry. For visitors, this has translated into the very modern yet incredibly old city you see now in the 21st century, where new elements work to both preserve and celebrate the city’s heritage and origins.

Barcelona has plenty of outdoor markets, restaurants, shops, museums, and churches. The city is also very walkable, with an extensive and reliable Metro system for more far-flung destinations.

For a complete overview, see wikitravel.org or visit barcelonaturisme.com.

Casa Convalescència

Casa Convalescència is located in a vibrant zone of the city, near Sagrada Familia, with easy access to urban and suburban areas of the city. It is part of the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site. Designed by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, it was built between 1905 and 1930. After housing the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (one of Europe's oldest healthcare centers) for more than eight decades, a restoration project commenced on the old pavilions in 2009. This process has restored the beauty of one of the iconic works of Catalonia's home-grown art nouveau, modernism.
