Travel and Visa Information
Traveling to Rome
Rome offers excellent international and domestic connectivity, making it an ideal location for international conferences. Whether you're traveling from Europe or overseas, there are multiple convenient options to reach the city and move around with ease.
1. Air Travel
-
Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (Fiumicino – FCO)
Rome’s primary airport, located about 30 km from the city center. It handles most international and intercontinental flights and is well connected to downtown Rome via:
• Leonardo Express: A non-stop train to Roma Termini station (leonardo-express.com).
• Regional trains: Cheaper, with more stops (trenitalia.com).
• Taxis and ride-sharing: Flat rate of ~€50 to city center (official taxis only).
• Airport shuttles and buses: Operate regularly between the airport and various parts of the city -
Ciampino Airport (CIA)
A smaller airport located about 15 km from central Rome, serving mainly low-cost and regional carriers.
2. Train and Public Transport
Rome’s central train station, Roma Termini, connects with high-speed rail lines to cities across Italy and Europe. Local public transportation operated by ATAC includes buses, trams, and metro lines, making it easy to navigate the city. We recommend downloading apps such as Moovit or Rome2Rio for real-time transit information.
Visa Information
Nationals from outside the EU/Schengen Area generally require a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) for visits up to 90 days; applications can be submitted as early as 6 months before travel, and no later than 15 days before departure, though applying 2–3 weeks in advance is recommended.
Participants are responsible for securing their own visa to enter Italy, if required.
MDPI can issue a Visa Support Letter to help with your visa application. To be eligible, the following conditions must be met:
• You must have submitted an abstract and completed registration payment.
• You must provide a scan of your valid passport showing your photo.
• You must submit a letter of support from your institution, confirming your participation.
• All documents should be submitted well before the conference. Last-minute requests will not be accommodated.
For more information on visa requirements and types, please consult the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or the Schengen Visa Info portal.
