Welcome Message

In order to commemorate International Day of Light 2024 (https://unesco.org/en/days/light), MDPI is launching a special webinar to encourage researchers to come together, take action, and highlight how the exchange of findings facilitates efforts to raise awareness about the study of light. The study of light has led to promising alternative energy sources, lifesaving medical advances in diagnostics technology and treatments, light-speed internet, and many other discoveries that have revolutionized society and shaped our understanding of the universe.

We are very much looking forward to seeing you at the MDPI International Day of Light 2024 Webinar. Please find below an up-to-date outline of presenters.

Introduction
Bio
Alexey Popov is a Research Professor at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. He was trained as a physicist, with an emphasis on Biomedical Optics (Biophotonics), Laser Physics, and Spectroscopy. His scientific activity focuses on the development of wearable and portable optical sensing solutions for biomedical diagnostics and wellness. Prof. Popov is an author and co-author of over 140 papers in international peer-reviewed scientific journals and conference proceedings, 5 book chapters and over 100 presentations at the major international conferences in the field, including over 25 plenary & invited lectures.

Nanoscience Laboratory, Department of Physics, University of Trento, Italy

Introduction
Bio
Lorenzo Pavesi is a Professor of Experimental Physics at the Department of Physics of the University of Trento (Italy). He leads the Nanoscience Laboratory (25 people), and teaches several classes at the Department of Physics of the University of Trento. He is the director of Q@TN, a joint lab between the University, the Bruno Kessler Foundation, CNR and INFN. He founded the research activity in semiconductor optoelectronics at the University of Trento. He has directed 42 PhD students and more than 48 Master thesis students. During the last years, he concentrated on Silicon-based photonics where he looks for the convergence between photonics and electronics. A recent development is toward integrated quantum photonics and neuromorphic photonics. He is an ERC grantee. He is an author or co-author of more than 500 papers, author of several reviews, editor of more than 15 books, author of 2 books and holds 9 patents. He is in the advisory board of Glass-to-Power, an Italian start-up. In 2001 he was awarded the title of Cavaliere by the Italian President for scientific merit. He holds an H-number of 64 according to Scopus and of 62 for Web of Science, and of 79 according to Google Scholar.

University of Vienna, Department of Physical Chemistry, Austria

Introduction
Bio
Wolfgang Kautek holds academic degrees from the Vienna University of Technology, Austria, and from the Technische Universität Berlin, Germany, and served as a research scientist at the University of Kentucky, USA, at the Fritz-Haber-Institute of the Max-Planck-Society, Berlin, at the IBM San Jose Research Laboratory, California, and the Siemens Research Center, Erlangen, Germany, from 1976 to 1987. 1988 he became head of the Laboratory for Thin Film Technology of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, Berlin, and Adjunct Professor at the Free University Berlin. 2004 he was appointed to the University of Vienna, Austria, as full-professor for physical chemistry. He served as Russell Severance Springer Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of California, Berkeley, in 2017. He conducts research in nanotechnology and laser processing of interfaces, also in the area of cultural heritage science. More than 230 scientific publications and 4 patents were authored by him.

Instituto de Micro y Nanotecnología, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Spain

Introduction
Bio
Antonio García-Martin was born in 1971 and is a Research Scientist in the Spanish Council of Scientific Research (CSIC). His scientific interests are in the area of nanophotonics. He is particularly interested in the study of the optical response of complex resonant nanostructures. These include metallic resonant structures (plasmonics and chiral plasmonics), high refractive index (lossless) materials, or those possessing simultaneously magneto-optical activity and resonant excitations (magneto-plasmonic materials). This gives rise to a plethora of application possibilities such as photonic crystal-based devices, sensors, modulators, energy harvesters, thermal emitters and diverse types of transducers. He has authored more than 120 scientific papers, more than 200 contributions to conferences, and has been involved in the organization of 16 scientific conferences at international and national levels.
