MDPI International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer Webinar 2024
16 Sep 2024, 10:00 (CEST)
Ozone, Ozone Layer, Ozone Preservation
Welcome from the Chair
In order to commemorate International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 2024 (https://www.un.org/en/observances/ozone-day), MDPI is launching a special webinar to encourage researchers to come together, take action, and highlight how the exchange of findings facilitates efforts to protect and preserve the ozone layer.
The preservation of the ozone layer is critical to shielding the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, which has significant implications for human health, ecosystems, and climate. Research and innovation in this field have led to crucial environmental policies, technological advancements, and sustainable practices that are vital to safeguarding our planet for future generations.
We are very much looking forward to seeing you at the MDPI International Day of Light 2024 Webinar. Please find below an up-to-date outline of presenters.
Date: 16 September2024

Keynote Speakers
Is There Any Danger to Ozone Layer Recovery in the Future?
Dr. Eugene Rozanov is a Senior Scientist at PMOD/WRC. In 1979 he started working In Main Geophysical Observatory and in 1986 received his PhD for the work in the atmospheric physics. In 1997 he moved to University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign to work on chemistry-climate model development. In 2001 he started his work on the solar variability influence on climate and ozone layer in IAC ETH and PMOD/WRC, Switzerland. He participated in the preparation of IPCC-2007 report and WMO and SPARC international scientific assessments on the development of the stratospheric ozone layer. Since 2001 he is involved in the several national and international projects aimed at the study of the ozone layer and climate evolution in the past and future.

Secretary General, Academy of Athens; Climate Envoy for Greece; Head of the Research Center for Atmospheric Physics and Climatology, Academy of Athens. Professor of Atmospheric and Environmental Physics at the Universities of Athens and Thessaloniki. Visiting Professor at the Universities of Boston, Minnesota and Oslo. Member of the Academy of Athens, Academia Europaea, Norwegian Academy, European Academy of Sciences and many other academies and scientific institutions. Ηas received a number of internationally recognized awards, including the Order of Honour from the President of the Hellenic Republic and the French Government Decoration “Commandeur dans l’ordre des Palmes académiques“. Honorary Doctorate Degree, Democritus University of Thrace, Honorary Professor of the Physics Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Honorary Doctorate Degree, University of Patras, Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, University Division of the American College ANATOLIA, Thessaloniki. Global Ozone Award, UNEP on the 10th Anniversary of the Montreal Protocol, Awards of the American Geophysical Union (Editors Award for Excellence in Refereeing and Yoram Kaufman Award), the European Academy of Sciences (Blaise Pascal Medal) and UNEP Honourable Mentions. He has supervised 55 master’s theses and more than 30 PhD theses. He has created from zero 8 recognized educational and research institutions and has published hundreds of research papers in prestigious scientific journals with significant impact factor. His proposal to the Greek Government for the creation of a flexible international mechanism to protect natural and cultural heritage monuments from climate change has been included among the emblematic UN activities by the Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres. This initiative was presented by the Prime Minister of Greece at COP25 in New York in 2019 and has been supported by more than 100 countries, UNESCO, the World Meteorological Organization and other NGOs such as ICOMOS and Europa Nostra.
Department of Geology and Geoenvironment, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece
Our Valuable Protective Ozone Layer
Kostas Eleftheratos is Associate Professor of Atmospheric Physics with applications to Climatology at the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2022-now). He holds a PhD diploma in Geological and Geoenvironmental Sciences from the same Department (2007). He performed postdoctoral research in the Center for Environmental Effects on Health of the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens (2008-2011) in the subject area of measurements of ozone and ultraviolet radiation with a Brewer spectrophotometer. He is responsible for the operation, maintenance and collection of the total ozone column and ultraviolet radiation measurements from the Brewer spectrophotometer in Athens. His research focuses on the changes in the composition of the atmosphere on short and long time and space scales (clouds, greenhouse gases, ozone, ultraviolet radiation, aerosols), the study of natural climatic oscillations, atmospheric effects from aircraft emissions, atmospheric pollution, changes in climatic parameters, and environmental effects on health.
