Q1. Is it still possible to submit an abstract for an oral or poster presentation at this time?
No, the abstract submission period closed on 15 September 2025. However, you may still register to participate in the live sessions until 8 November 2025.
Q2. I have been selected for an oral/poster presentation. When will it take place, and how can I join?
You can check the exact schedule on the conference program available on the official website. Within one week before the conference, you will receive multiple reminders with the login link and session details. Please make sure to check your email regularly.
Q3. My abstract was accepted as a poster presentation. How should the Poster Presentation be?
Poster presentations will be conducted online in the “Flash Poster Session” format, which includes a 5-minute live presentation to share your screen and quickly present your poster, without a Q&A session.
Q4. I cannot find the option or link to upload my poster. When and how can I upload it?
Only the submitting author has access to the “upload” function on Sciforum. If you cannot upload your file, please send it along with your Sciforum ID to iecmd2025@mdpi.com. Please upload your file to the Sciforum platform before the conference begins (before 11 November 2025).
Q5. Will I receive a Certificate of Participation? How and when will the certificates be issued?
Yes. All participants at the event and attendees to the live session are entitled to a certificate after the conference. Certificates will be available for download in the My Certificates section on Sciforum after conference closing, and you will be notified by email once they are ready.
Q6. My abstract has been accepted, but I did not receive a notification for an oral or poster presentation. Can I still present my work?
Due to limited time slots, not all accepted abstracts can be included as oral or poster presentations, which are selected by scientific committee. However, all accepted abstracts are eligible to upload a poster via your author dashboard. All uploaded posters will be displayed in the Poster Gallery section on the conference website from the start of the event, where participants can view and comment during the conference.

We are pleased to announce the 2nd International Electronic Conference on Medicine - Exploring Cutting Edge Discoveries in Neurology (IECMD2025), which will take place online from 11 to 13 November 2025.
Conference Overview: This conference will present the latest studies in several fields of Neurology. The aim of this conference is to show the current state, challenges, opportunities, and future trends, and to allow the exchange of ideas and discussion of controversies and new possibilities for building collaboration among participants.
Key Themes: All clinical medicine-related scientists, researchers, and individuals are welcome to attend this event and share their findings pertaining, but not limited, to the following general and related themes:
- Neurodegeneration and Neuroinflammation Across the Motor and Spinal Axis (Multiple Sclerosis, ALS, HD and Spinal Cord Injury);
- Dementia Spectrum Disorders: From Frontotemporal Degeneration to Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Disease;
- Stroke and Brain Injury;
- Sleep Disorders;
- Chronic Pain and Headaches.
Conference Format: All submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the conference committee. Following the conference, authors are welcome to submit a proceedings paper, where the publication fee will be waived. Selected contributions will be invited for submission to the journal Medicina (ISSN: 1648-9144; Impact Factor: 2.4), which ranks Q1 (78/332 in the Medicine, General & Internal category), CiteScore in 2024 (4.1), with a 20% discount on the publication fee.

Dr. Alberto Ouro is a biochemist and received his PhD Cum Laude from the University of the Basque Country in 2013, thanks to a competitive scholarship from the Basque Government. Dr. Ouro completed a 3-year post-doctoral stay at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, under the supervision of Dr. Buganim, funded by a competitive scholarship from the Basque Government. Dr. Ouro focuses his work on the role of sphingolipids and lysophospholipids as theragnostic tools in several diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, cancer, stroke and migraine. Dr. Ouro works as a R2B researcher in the NeuroAging Group (NEURAL) at IDIS. Dr. Ouro has published more than 60 articles and 4 book chapters. He has contributed to more than 50 conferences. More than 30 research projects. 3 patents in exploitation. Dr. Ouro is a member of scientific societies such as SEBBM, Sphingolipid Club, ESMI and FENS.

Allison B. Reiss, M.D. is an internal medicine physician, educator and molecular biologist who studies the immune and inflammatory mechanisms that promote the development of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of cognitive impairment. Her research is directed toward finding effective therapies for these disease states. Dr. Reiss is Head of The Inflammation Laboratory and Associate Professor of Medicine at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine. She received her M.D. from the State University of New York - Downstate College of Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - Rutgers. She is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Reiss is a member of the Medical, Scientific & Memory Screening Advisory Board of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. She is well-published in medical and scientific journals and has chaired symposia at national and international conferences. Dr. Reiss is Section Editor-in-Chief of Neurology for Medicina and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Investigative Medicine and Reviews in Cardiovascular Medicine. Dr. Reiss has a strong passion for community outreach and is dedicated to improving healthcare, especially for older populations.

Anastasia Bougea is a Neurologist, postodoctoral researcher in Cellular and Molecular neurobiology laboratory in Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens. Dr. Bougea is a movement disoder specialist in the Parkinson and Related Disorders Outpatient Clinic at Eginition Hospital of University of Athens in Greece. Ηer recent research work is primarily in the field of biomarker evaluation for Parkinson’s disease and other atypical parkinsonian disorders and she participates in European and International collaborations.
Dr. Hyunjoong Kim

Dr. Hyunjoong Kim is a distinguished researcher and clinician specializing in pain neuroscience, musculoskeletal rehabilitation, and physical therapy. With extensive expertise in chronic pain management and rehabilitation sciences, he brings valuable insights to both clinical practice and academic research. His work focuses on integrating neuroscience-based approaches with manual therapy techniques, particularly in managing chronic pain conditions. Dr. Kim completed his PhD in Physical Therapy from Sahmyook University in 2022, where his research centered on pain neuroscience and musculoskeletal disorders. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals and currently leads groundbreaking research at the Neuromusculoskeletal Science Laboratory. His recent works on pain neuroscience education and manual therapy interventions have significantly contributed to the field of chronic pain management.
Prof. Dr. Simona Dragan

Dr. Simona Dragan is a distinguished cardiologist, educator, mentor, and researcher with over 30 years of experience in cardiovascular care. A graduate of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timișoara (1985), she specialized in Internal Medicine (1994) and Cardiology (1996), earned a Ph.D. in Coronary Artery Disease (1999), and received a European Cardiologist diploma (2005). With 114 publications and 170 conference presentations, her work is internationally recognized. Her research focuses on integrative medicine, functional foods, and metabolic diseases. Her academic influence extends beyond borders to the likes of the American universities of Duke and Georgetown, where she worked as a visiting professor. A Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and member of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Dragan is a passionate high achiever, who is renowned for her clinical excellence and academic impact. 2. Dr. Daniel Romaus-Sanjurjo
Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Fellow, NeuroAging Group (NEURAL), Health Research Institute of Santiago de Compostela (IDIS).
Dr. Daniel Romaus-Sanjurjo is a biologist who obtained his PhD in Neuroscience Cum Laude from the University of Santiago de Compostela in 2018. His research is focused on the molecular pathways underlying neuronal survival and axon repair. Throughout his PhD career, Dr Romaus-Sanjurjo gained experience in fish models of spinal cord injury, which was then improved by learning rodent models of axon repair during his postdoctoral stay in the University of California San Diego. Dr. Romaus-Sanjurjo returned to Spain to lead a project focused on cellular pathways promoting neuronal survival in mouse models of stroke and Alzheimer’s disease, thanks to be funded by Galician (Xunta de Galicia), Spanish (Sara Borrell) and European (Marie Curie) postdoctoral fellowships. Dr Romaus-Sanjurjo is an emerging young scientist who has more than 25 peer-reviewed publications, he has published in some of the most important cell biology and neuroanatomy journals, such as Neuron, Frontiers in Neuroanatomy, Cell Death & Disease, Cell Death Discovery, iScience, Neural Regeneration Research or Neuropharmacology. Moreover, these works have been presented in prestigious national and international conferences and workshops (SENC, FENS, SfN, EMBO.
Dr. Cristian Falup Pecurariu
Faculty of Medicine, Transilvania University Brasov, Romania
Dr. Cristian Falup-Pecurariu is Head of the Department of Neurology, County Clinic Hospital Brasov and Professor of Neurology, Transilvania University from Brasov, Romania. He holds a 1 year fellowship of the European Neurological Society in movement disorders and sleep medicine at Hospital Clinic, University of Barcelona, Spain. During his career he was President of the European Association of Young Neurologists and Trainees (EAYNT), EAYNT Liaison Officer with World Federation of Neurological Society, co-representative of Europe on the International Working Group for Young Neurologists and Trainees (World Federation of Neurology). He is MDS member from 2003. In the past he served in MDS as member and afterwards Chair of the Education Committee of MDS-ES, now being member of the Education Committee, Chair of the Non Motor PD Study Group, Chair of the COA Education and Training Program Committee. He is also former member of the Executive Committee of the MDS-ES, former member of the International Executive Committee of the MDS. In EAN he is serving as member of the Program Committee and of the Mentorship Task Force. He is the initiator and Course Director of the Brasov Movement Disorders Teaching Course (14 editions).

Daniel Marson, JD, PhD is a clinical neuropsychologist, licensed attorney, and Emeritus Professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He directed the Department’s Division of Neuropsychology from 1995 to 2016 and the UAB Alzheimer’s Disease Center from 2005 to 2015. Dr. Marson graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota (1976), and earned his JD at the University of Chicago Law School (1981) and his PhD in clinical psychology (specializations in geropsychology and neuropsychology) at Northwestern University Medical School (1990). Dr. Marson has lectured nationally regarding competency and other medical-legal and ethical issues in dementia and other neurocognitive disorders. He has published over 100 papers, handbooks, and book chapters on these topics. He has been principal investigator on multiple National Institute of Health (NIH) funded studies of decisional and functional capacity in Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment, and traumatic brain injury. His work on financial capacity in older adults has been featured in the New York Times, USA Today, BBC, Kiplinger Report, and NPR. At the national level, Dr. Marson is the past president and a fellow of the National Academy of Neuropsychology (NAN). He is a member and former chair of the Internal Ethics Committee of the Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study, an NIH funded clinical trials group. He has served as a chartered reviewer at the NIH Center for Scientific Review. Dr. Marson previously served on the Committee on Human Research of the American Psychological Association and chaired the committee in 2012. Dr. Marson often testifies as an expert witness in civil and criminal forensic matters. Mark Johnson is Professor of Pain and Analgesia. He is an international expert on the science of pain and its management and the world leader on transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). He has published over 300 peer reviewed articles. Prof. Mark has investigated the science of pain and its management since the mid 1980's and he is a world expert on transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS); his book on TENS was shortlisted for a British Medical Association Book Award. He has expertise in quantitative and qualitative methodologies and in conducting clinical trials (phase 1-3), laboratory studies on humans, and evidence syntheses (meta-analyses, meta-ethnography and Cochrane reviews). He has attained over £2 million in research income, and he undertakes expert consultancy on behalf of the university for the public and private sectors (e.g., GlaxoSmithKline, Philips Research International, Medi-Direct International, the Committee of Advertising Practice). He is an editorial board member for journals and a member of various learned societies. He has published circa 300 peer reviewed articles and over 30 invited book chapters.

Dr. Hugo Kim is a neuroscientist with expertise in gene expression profiling to study neural development and repair. He completed his Ph.D. in Neuroscience at the University of Southern California under Dr. James A. Knowles, developing a Patch-seq-based single-cell RNA sequencing method to characterize human embryonic neurons, including Cajal-Retzius cells. As a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Binhai Zheng’s lab at UC San Diego, Dr. Kim has applied single-cell technologies to spinal cord injury research. His work identified NFE2L2 as a novel regulator of axon regeneration and led to the development of a Regeneration Classifier, published in Neuron. He is currently integrating spatial transcriptomics to better understand how regenerating axons interact with the injury environment, forming the foundation of his independent research program.

The occupational hazards and multiple sclerosis (MS) during the COVID-19 pandemic reveal a multifaceted interplay between mental health, work-related challenges, and the unique experiences of individuals with MS. The initial research highlights the significant work-related outcomes of healthcare workers with multiple sclerosis. A secondary meta-analysis study was conducted to provide a comprehensive examination of the current state of research regarding the occupational outcomes for individuals with multiple sclerosis. The study found that only 23% of participants experienced a relapse during the pandemic, yet more than half reported an increase in the frequency or severity of adverse MS symptoms, which were exacerbated by the occupational hazards during the COVID-19 pandemic's stressors. The correlation between increased chronic symptoms and higher perceived stress levels further emphasizes the psychological dimensions of living with MS during such a stressful period. This highlight the significant gaps in the literature, specifically noting the scarcity of longitudinal and interventional studies that could offer deeper insights into how occupational outcomes for MS have evolved and may have been exacerbated for this vulnerable population. The existing literature is limited in scope and lacks clear definitions regarding occupational outcomes, complicating the interpretation of findings. This study emphasizes the economic burden of MS on public health and the necessity for further research into the bio-psychosocial factors influencing work disability and potential protective elements that could enhance occupational outcomes. The findings point to the necessity of organizational interventions, such as the provision to mitigate these adverse effects, and underscore the significance of workplace policies in promoting mental well-being during crises. The evolving landscape of work-related issues in the context of chronic illness necessitates a nuanced understanding of how external factors, such as a global health crisis, can shape the experiences of affected individuals. There is a clear need for targeted interventions and further research. |

Spinal cord injury is a neurological and pathological state that causes motor, sensory and autonomic dysfunction. The corticospinal tract (CST) is one of the main motor tracts in the spinal cord, so damaging it causes a loss of fine motor movements and dexterity. The mouse model of unilateral pyramidotomy allows the study of compensatory sprouting in the CST axons. However, to date, surgery confirmation can only be performed postmortem using immunofluorescent staining. Prognosis biomarkers can help optimize animal care and minimize pain and suffering. In this context, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an effective tool that allows for the comprehensive and non-invasive assessment of the progression of different types of CNS lesions. Moreover, in vivo preclinical CNS models can be used as their own control in longitudinal studies. In this preclinical study, we proposed the use of MRI to assess the outcome of pyramidotomy surgery in C57BL/6 mice (n = 21). We examined the volume and T2-signal in the area occupied by the dorsal column (DC). We found non-significant changes, with none in the volume nor the T2-signal at any post-injury week. Then, knowing that the CST is a small tract in the DC, we measured the area occupied by the CST within the DC. Interestingly, we observed a general reduction in volumes, which was statistically significant at 7 days post-injury. On the other hand, we observed a decrease in the T2-signal following injury that was statistically significant from 14 days post-injury onward. In conclusion, these results indicate that MRI could be a suitable tool to detect slight changes in the T2-signal in small regions in an earlier way to predict the efficacy of the surgery. |

Introduction: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are widely recognized for their hallmark cognitive deficits, typically characterized by progressive cognitive deterioration. However, neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) including depression, apathy, anxiety, irritability, and sleep disturbances are increasingly prevalent in early stages of these conditions and significantly influence disease trajectory and patient outcomes. Importantly, neuropsychiatric symptoms often precede overt memory loss by several years, with subtle mood and behavioral disturbances serving as early pre-diagnostic markers of underlying Alzheimer’s pathology. Their presence complicates diagnosis, accelerates disease progression, and intensifies caregiver burden. However, distinguishing NPS arising from neurodegeneration from primary psychiatric disorders remain a profound diagnostic challenge, delaying timely intervention and obscuring early disease recognition. Methods: A structured narrative review of peer-reviewed studies published between 2012 and 2025 was conducted using PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, PsycINFO, Google Scholar, and CINAHL to examine the diagnostic complexities, clinical impact, and current management of NPS in early-stage AD and MCI. We argue that understanding and managing NPS is essential to improving clinical outcomes and guiding therapeutic innovation. Findings: NPS affects up to 80% of individuals with early AD or MCI, often preceding cognitive decline. Current management strategies rely heavily on non-pharmacological interventions such as caregiver support, behavioral activation, and structured routines, while pharmacological options remain limited by modest efficacy and safety concerns. Advancing knowledge of neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) and their association with cognitive decline is critical for establishing more precise diagnostic criteria and for informing personalized therapeutic approaches. Conclusions: Not understanding the role and impact of neuropsychiatric symptoms in early-stage AD and MCI may have serious clinical, personal, and societal consequences. It may lead to delayed diagnosis, poor patient care, and increased caregiver stress and hampers both research and innovation. Recognizing NPS as early and integral features of disease progression is essential for transforming the diagnosis, care, and treatment of dementia-related disorders. |

Introducion: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, inflammatory disease affecting the central nervous system. Although primarily managed in outpatient settings, MS may lead to costly hospitalizations. While hospital mortality associated with MS is uncommon in high-income countries, its impact within developing healthcare systems remains insufficiently studied. This study aims to describe the clinical and economic implications of MS-related hospitalizations in Brazil. Methods: A descriptive ecological study was conducted using data from the Brazilian Unified Health System Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS). All hospital admissions registered under ICD-10 code G35 (MS) between July 2015 and July 2025 were included. The variables analyzed comprised the number of hospitalizations, in-hospital deaths, length of stay, associated costs, and regional distribution across the country. Results: A total of 9,482 hospitalizations for Multiple Sclerosis were recorded, amounting to 92,415 hospital days. There were 245 in-hospital deaths, resulting in a mean case fatality rate of 2.6% (ranging from 1.7% to 3.2%). The average length of stay was 9.7 days. Cumulative hospital expenditures reached R$ 24.8 million (approximately USD 5 million), with an average cost of R$ 2,600 per admission—exceeding R$ 3,000 in certain years. Regionally, the Southeast accounted for 43% of all hospitalizations and the South for 25%, whereas the North and Northeast regions showed proportionally higher mortality rates (>3%). Conclusion: From 2015 to 2025, MS led to nearly 10,000 hospital admissions in Brazil, with hospital mortality rates two to three times higher than those reported in high-income countries. The economic impact of almost R$ 25 million reinforces the significance of MS within the framework of a universal public healthcare system. Regional disparities emphasize the urgent need for public health policies to improve equitable access to specialized care and to reduce preventable hospitalizations. |

S1. Neurodegeneration and Neuroinflammation Across the Motor and Spinal Axis (including Multiple Sclerosis, ALS, Huntington’s Disease, and Spinal Cord Injury)
The Spinal Cord session offers a platform for sharing the latest scientific breakthroughs and innovative ideas in the fast-evolving field of central nervous system (CNS) injury and repair, with a particular emphasis on spinal cord injury. Spinal cord injuries represent a significant unmet medical challenge and highlight many of the difficulties associated with CNS disorders. Due to their complexity, these injuries require a comprehensive, multifaceted approach for effective understanding and treatment. This session will showcase a dynamic lineup of speakers presenting cutting-edge research across a range of strategies, including neuroprotection, neuroregeneration, neuromodulation, neurotechnology, and more.
