Physical Exercise and Health in Aging

Certain individuals possess anatomical, metabolic, functional, and behavioural characteristics that are precisely those required to respond or execute excel performances. Regarding heritable genetic effects upon endurance and muscle strength, it seems irrefutable. Nevertheless, stress-related illness and mental health problems reduce life expectancy and increase morbidity independently of genetic profile. Death is a natural consequence. Although, being physically active is crucial to combat the adverse health effects of urbanization and stress. New approaches need to be established that are better aligned with the needs in ageing, specific conditions, and genetic profile, including strategies to promote quality of life in older people.

Introduction
Bio
Ana Pereira is a sports scientist with interest in analysing the effect of exercise in different parameters of health with particular focus in design programme trainings for specific ageing groups. Doctor of Sport Sciences at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro with work in genetic effect on physical performance. Currently, Ana is a co-coordinator of Sport Degree in Education in the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (IPS) and also a represent member of EUDRES in Well Being & Ageing. She is also a researcher in national local research centers (CIEF and CIIAS-IPS), participating in several projects. Research interests include the evaluation and modelling of human performance during ageing process, having published several papers in peer-review journals and books chapters. Is frequently invited to participate as scientific conferences related to “aging and exercise”. These outcomes were achieved in collaboration with several international centers and researchers with national and also international factor.

Jorge Soares is Professor in the Department of Sports Sciences, Exercise and Health, in UTAD since 2007. He is also a Researcher integrated in CIDESD - Research Center in Sports Sciences, Health Sciences and Human Development. PhD in Sports Science in UTAD with special focus on health, physical exercise, and DNA damage. School of Education and Social Science, Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, Portugal

Introduction
Bio
Pedro Morouço is a Professor at IPLeiria on Biomechanics; Physiology; Health Sciences and Research Methods. His research activity focuses, mostly, on products and processes engineering, aiming to bringing the gap between the lab and real applications. In the last years, he has been invited to collaborate in several national and international projects. Despite his young age, he has co-edited books, authored and co-authored several scientific works, is member of the scientific committees in various conferences, and editorial member and reviewer of various journals. Above all, Pedro is a humble researcher that understand the values of working as a team. Natural leader to reinforce the strengths and bridge weaknesses, developing new ideas and thinking outside the box. Finally, Pedro is aware of the role of science for society awareness. Thus, he developed skills to be able to reach wider audiences (2 awards in the National Science Communications Contests and representative of Portugal in an international event, Winner of The Publishing Method competition by the American Journal Experts, 2017, distinguished with the New Investigator Award 2014 and Hans Gros Emerging Researcher Award 2017 from ISBS, Prestigious Award 2017 by the Leiria City-hall and named one of the Personalities for 2017 by the regional press).
