Yordan Garbatov is a Full Professor and Head of the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Academic Unit at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa. He is President of the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC) at IST and Chairman of Committee III.2 Fatigue and Fracture of the International Ship and Offshore Structure Congress (ISSC), 2015-2023. His research areas and Interests are ship, offshore platform and wind turbine supporting structures; welding simulation; fatigue and fracture mechanics; ultimate strength; degradation of ageing marine structures; reliability and risk-based multi-criteria design, maintenance and operation; life-cycle benefit analysis; energy efficiency and carbon footprint and hybrid light-weight marine structures.
On 9 November 2022, the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering (JMSE) organized and held a public webinar intending to discuss the current advances in design analysis and maintenance of green innovative marine structures. The team speakers used this opportunity to share their experience and research activities exchanging ideas and project results with the webinar attendees. More than 60 interested parties participated in the webinar.
Professor Yordan Garbatov, president of the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC) at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal, chaired the webinar and discussed some fundamental aspects of “Risk-based Hybrid Lightweight Ships Structural Design Accounting for Carbon Footprint”. Professor Joško Parunov, from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, presented “Recent developments in the Environmental Conditions for Design and Analysis of Marine Structures in the Adriatic Sea”. Professor Nian-Zhong Chen from the School of Civil Engineering at Tianjin University, China, discussed some advances in “Digital Twin of Floating Offshore Wind Turbine” and Professor Bin Liu from the Green & Smart River-Sea-Going Ship, Cruise and Yacht Research Centre at the Wuhan University of Technology, China, presented “Recent advances in Structural Design and Analysis of Cruise Ship and Yacht”.
The webinar attendees submitted questions to the speakers, some of which were discussed immediately, and others will be replied to by e-mail due to the shortage of time. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend. The full recording can be found here on Sciforum website.
