1st Machines Webinar

Design and Control of Electrical Machines

New applications of electric machines have emerged. Novel control strategies are applied to improve the system performance of electric machine and power electronics. In 2021, we organized a special issue, which focused on the emerging topics in electrical machines and power electronics. Followed by the success of the SI, we will hold a Webinar to highlight the recent topics on corresponding applications, such as Industry 4.0, robotics, renewable energy, and AI techniques. The official langue if the Webinar is English. We invited two renowned scholars, Prof. Jia-Yush Yen and Prof. Hamid Reza Karimi, to introduce their recent research on these topics.
We are grateful for the support of the sponsoring organizations, the speakers, and the audiences. Hope this event will provide the best experience of learning and sharing to those who are interested in the knowledge of Design and Control of Electrical Machines.

Invited Speakers

Mechanical Engineering Department, National Taiwan University, Taiwan

Professor Jia-Yush Yen received his B.S. degree from National Tsing-Hwa University, Taiwan, in 1980, the M.S. degree from the University of Minnesota, USA, in 1983, and the Ph.D. degree from University of California, Berkeley in 1989, all in mechanical engineering. He then joined the Mechanical Engineering faculty of National Taiwan University, where he served as the Department Chair, the Director of Tjing-Ling Industrial Research Institute, and the Dean of the College of Engineering until 2017. In 2021, Prof. Yen became a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. He is also the Present of the University. Prof. Yen also served as the Chair of the Automation Area for the Ministry of Science and Technologies, Taiwan. He was the president of the Chinese Institute of Automation Engineers, Taiwan (CIAE), and is now the Present of the Chinese Automatic Control Society, Taiwan. He also served in numerous academic positions, including the Director of the NTU Research and Development Center for Medical Devices, the NTU Research Center for Intelligent Machines. He is a fellow of the ASME, the Chinese Society of Mechanical Eng., the CIAE, the Robotics Society of Taiwan, and the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Yen received twice the Outstanding Research Award from the Ministry of Science and Technologies, Taiwan. He also received numerous compliments from the government for his public service. His research interests are in the areas of mechatronic systems, computer peripherals, and nano-manipulations.

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Politecnico di Milano, Italy

Industry 4.0 has enabled the automation of process improvements and decision making based on the collection of large amounts of plant data. Due to the economic advantages of maintenance optimization, there is significant interest from both academia and industry on the topic of fault detection and prognostics for complex systems. The objective of this speech is to address some challenges and recent results on fault diagnosis of rotary machinery systems, with a focus on advanced artificial intelligence algorithms developments. The talk will be concluded with some concluding remarks on both technical and practical aspects of intelligent fault diagnosis for rotary machinery systems.
Hamid Reza Karimi is currently Professor of Applied Mechanics with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy. His original research and development achievements span a broad spectrum within the topic of control systems, mechatronics, intelligent systems, and fault diagnosis with applications such as vehicles, robotics and manufacturing systems. Prof. Karimi is a Member of Academia Europa, Distinguished Fellow of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration (IIAV), Fellow of The International Society for Condition Monitoring (ISCM), Member of Agder Academy of Science and Letters and also a member of the IFAC Technical Committee on Mechatronic Systems, the IFAC Technical Committee on Robust Control, and the IFAC Technical Committee on Automotive Control. He is serving as Chief Editor, Subject Editor, Technical Editor or Associate Editor for some International Journals and Book Series Editor for Springer, CRC Press and Elsevier. Prof. Karimi has been awarded as the 2016-2021 Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher in Engineering, the 2020 IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems Guillemin-Cauer Best Paper Award, August-Wilhelm-Scheer Visiting Professorship Award, JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) Research Award, and Alexander-von-Humboldt-Stiftung research Award, for instance. He has also participated as General Chair, keynote/plenary speaker, distinguished speaker or program chair for several international conferences in the areas of Control Systems, Robotics and Mechatronics.
