Nanomaterials for Environmental Remediation
Thank you very much for this kind introduction, I am very glad to have the opportunity to introduce my colleagues and their recent and novel contributions on the field of the advances in nanomaterials for environmental remediation.
Water contamination is one of the most serious threats to human health and ecosystems on a global scale. Numerous dangerous environmental pollutants, both organic and inorganic, have become a significant global issue in water bodies. In this contest, nanotechnology can represent a considerable promise in the realm of water treatment. In particular, the development of environmentally sustainable nanomaterials with specific advantages, such as high efficiency and selectivity, earth abundance, recyclability, low-cost manufacturing processes, and stability, is mandatory, and could represent a significant challenge in this field.

D. Caschera was graduated in Chemistry on 2001 in Università Sapienza (Rome) and was awarded a Ph.D. in Industrial and Mechanical Engineering by Università of Roma Tre (Rome) in 2008. Currently she works as senior researcher at Institute of for the Study of Nanostructured Materials (ISMN) of the Italian National Research Council (Rome). Since 2002, her research activity is focused on surface modification by plasma treatments, CVD-PVD deposition of carbon-based thin film and synthesis and structural, morphological and functional characterizations of nanostructured materials. Recently, she is involved in fabrication of hybrid nanocomposites, from green treatment of agri-waste, for environmental remediation and sustainability. She is involve, even as PI, in several national and international projects, in the field of the fabrication and characterization of nanostructured materials, for advanced technologist applications. She is responsible of Surface Laboratory, Thin Film Deposition Laboratory and Optical Spectroscopy Laboratory in ISMN. She is author of about 60 articles in international journals with more than 1600 citations and an H-index 24 and of numerous communications in national and international conferences.
Invited Speakers
Institute for the Study of Nanostructured Materials, ISMN–CNR, Palermo, c/o Department ChiBioFarAm, University of Messina, Italy
Dr. Plutino graduated Summa Cum Laude in Chemistry at the University of Messina, Italy, in 1993. In September 1997 she obtained her PhD in Chemical Sciences from the Univ. of Messina. Since 2001 she has been a permanent researcher at the Institute for the Study of Nanostructured Materials of the CNR (ISMN) in Palermo and since 2020 she is a senior researcher at ISMN-CNR, Messina. She is an expert in Material Sciences; her research activities deal with R&D projects and consultancies for developing advanced PoC products with a particular view to innovation, sustainability, and digital transformation. The current research interests include essentially the design, synthesis, and structural study of multifunctional and multicomponent nano-hybrid or nanocomposites, as advanced materials or coatings for surface properties implementation, with various potential applications in optoelectronic, sensing, catalysis, environmental remediation, buildings, cultural heritage, and biomedicine. Recently the research activity has aimed to set green and eco-friendly synthesis protocols starting from natural substances or waste, to obtain functional materials that can also be recycled and re-used several times. She is co-author of more than 80 scientific works (h-index=26), published in peer-reviewed international journals, attended at many national and international conferences as poster presentations or oral communications, and related to research activities funded by several national and regional projects. She is co-founder and ex-president of the innovative startup ATHENA Green Solutions S.r.l., a spin-off of CNR and UniMe, and referent inventor of two internationally published patents (ArgiNaRe and Bioremediation).
Institute for the Study of Nanostructured Materials, ISMN–CNR, Palermo, c/o Department ChiBioFarAm, University of Messina, Italy
Dr. Sfameni is a TD Researcher at ISMN-CNR on the project SAMOTHRACE, MUR-PNRR innovation ecosystem, focusing on the "Design, rational synthesis and characterization of hybrid and functional sol-gel based micro/nanostructured materials with high protective performance and for the implementation of surface properties". She was a post-doctoral fellow at the ISMN-CNR, funded by the PON MUR 2014-2020 TETI project, focusing on the ”Design and synthesis of smart and innovative materials for the development of sensors for monitoring environmental pollutants”. She gained her Ph.D. in 2022 in Engineering and Chemistry of Materials and Construction at the University of Messina, with a project “Study of chromium-free anticorrosive nanotechnological systems in surface pretreatment in aqueous phase” financed by Confindustria (Noxosorkem Group S.r.l.) and CNR (sc. resp. and PhD thesis co-tutor Dr. M.R. Plutino).
National Research Center, 33 El-Bohouth St. (Former El-Tahrir St.), Egypt
Prof. A.M. Adel took her degree in 1994 in Cairo University with a thesis entitled “Non Conventional Bleaching for some Agriculture Wastes" and her PhD in 2001 on “"Recycling of Old Corrugated Container". From 1991 she is working for NRC in Cairo and actually she is professor in the Cellulose and Paper Department of the National Research Center. She has a great experience in the field of Materials Science and Nanomaterials. In particular, in the last years she is involved in study on treatment of natural polymer and development of sustainable functional polymers, nanocomposite and membranes, even starting from the recycling of agri-waste, for applications in pulp and paper Industry, for Packaging and environmental remediation. She has been involved in several national and international project on the use of agricultural residues for the preparation of biodegradable nanocellulose composites, most as principal or deputy investigator. She has been supervisor of several PhD students. In 2000, she won the ASRT prize. Prof. Dr. Yehia Abd El-Latif award in cellulose, paper and wood. She is co-author of about 40 scientific works (h-index=17), published in peer-reviewed international journals and attended at many national and international conferences as poster presentations or oral communications.
