Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes (POSS) — Synthesis, Functionalization, Applications
Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) combine the features of inorganic and organic matter as they are composed of an inorganic -Si-O- core cage, and various organic groups that can be attached to the Si atoms. Notably, with an appropriate functionalization of the vertex groups, POSS can be applied as precursors in the synthesis of new nanomaterials or be incorporated in the organic polymer matrix as a reactive or inert filler. In that respect, functionalized POSS may serve as unique nanobuilding blocks in the synthesis of novel hybrid materials with improved characteristics over the traditional composites.
In recent years, functionalizations of POSS molecules and their incorporation into polymeric matrices have paved new ways for reinforced engineering composites, flame-retardant fillers or tissue engineering scaffolds and drug delivery systems. During this Webinar, POSS synthesis and functionalisation routes will be presented, and there will be a discussion on the glass transition in POSS containing polymers and on the effects of silsesquioxane structure on the polymeric matrix.

Chair
Department of Chemistry and Technology of Polymers, Cracow University of Technology, Poland
Professor Krzysztof Pielichowski, head of Department of Chemistry and Technology of Polymers, Cracow University of Technology, is an expert in polymer (nano)technology and chemistry, particularly in the areas of polymer nanocomposites with engineering polymers, and hybrid organic–inorganic materials with POSS, displaying various architectures. He is currently performing a research program in the area of synthesis and evaluation of properties of polyurethane / silsequioxane hybrids with improved thermal and mechanical properties, in which POSS moieties are covalently linked or physically mixed. One of the main aims of the performed research works is to find the crucial structure–property relationships. He is a co-author or editor of eight books and over 140 papers with impact factors, and was supervisor of eleven Ph.D. theses (completed).
Invited Speakers
Department of Science and Innovation Technology (DiSIT), University of Eastern Piedmont, Italy
Enrico Boccaleri is Associated Professor at the University of Eastern Piedmont, at the Department of Science and Innovation Technology (DiSIT). His main research activities are related to the synthesis and characterisation of inorganic and hybrid materials with one to three nanoscaled dimensions. He investigated the role of nanomaterials as functional additives for challenging features as modifying properties of common polymers, improving the thermal and mechanical behaviour as well as functional properties. His current research context is focused on matching interactions at the nanometric level with macroscopic features, with the scope of designing efficient materials for sustainable performances. He is co-author of more than 70 papers on international journals and of five national and international patents.
Department of Chemistry and Technology of Polymers, Cracow University of Technology, Poland
Dr Konstantinos (Kostas) Raftopoulos is an assistant professor at the Department of Chemistry and Technology of Polymers of Cracow University of Technology. He is a Physicist with a PhD from the National Technical University of Athens. He has worked as a postdoc at the CUT and the Technical University of Munich. Over the last decade, he has studied the calorimetric and dynamic glass transition of polyurethane–POSS hybrid materials. For this purpose, he employs Differential Scanning Calorimetry, as well as Dielectric Relaxation Spectroscopy, and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis. Except for polyurethane, POSS, and glass transition, his interests include stimuli responsive behaviour and hydration of polymers. He is a coauthor of 41 peer-reviewed articles, including a review published in “Progress in Polymer Science” on the glass transition of polymer-POSS systems.
