Department of Chemistry and Technology of Polymers, Cracow University of Technology, Poland; Professor Krzysztof Pielichowski, head of Department of Chemistry and Technology of Polymers, Cracow University of Technology, is an expert in polymer (nano)technology and chemistry, particularly in the areas of polymer nanocomposites with engineering polymers, and hybrid organic–inorganic materials with POSS, displaying various architectures. He is currently performing a research program in the area of synthesis and evaluation of properties of polyurethane / silsequioxane hybrids with improved thermal and mechanical properties, in which POSS moieties are covalently linked or physically mixed. One of the main aims of the performed research works is to find the crucial structure–property relationships. He is a co-author or editor of eight books and over 140 papers with impact factors, and was supervisor of eleven Ph.D. theses (completed).

On Monday 20 September 2021, MDPI and the Journal Molecules organized the 18th webinar, entitled " Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes (POSS) — Synthesis, Functionalization, Applications".
In the beginning, the Chair of the Webinar – Prof. Krzysztof Pielichowski from Cracow University of Technology, Poland, gave a short introduction on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) which, after funtionalization, are useful building blocks in the synthesis of new materials with various applications, e.g. in reinforced polymer composites, as biomedical materials and in catalysis.
The first talk on "POSS synthesis and functionalization” by Prof. Enrico Boccaleri from University of Eastern Piedmont, Italy, focused on both well-established and new synthetic routes leading to POSS with different functional features. In the next presentation given by Dr. Konstantinos Raftopoulos from Cracow University of Technology, Poland, glass transition in POSS containing polymers, including the role of specific POSS incorporation ways, was discussed. In the third lecture, Prof. Ignazio Blanco from University of Catania, Italy, talked about the influence of POSS structure in polymeric matrix dispersion on the properties of hybrid materials, especially their thermal and thermo-oxidative stability.
The presentations were followed by a Q&A and a discussion, moderated by the Chair, in which two important aspects were highlighted, namely (i) the necessity of up-scaling POSS production in order to to develop new products at industrial scale, and (ii) the importance of interdisciplinary research on POSS with the participation of chemists, physicists, biologists, materials science experts, etc. that should considerably help to design new hybrid materials with tailor-made characteristics.
