Welcome from the Chair
7th Molecules Webinar
Applications of Chromatographic Techniques in Biological, Food and Environmental Samples
Nowadays, chromatography is a powerful analytical tool that enables researchers to determine pollutants and drugs at trace levels, and to identify new compounds and characterize the composition of different matrices such as biological, food and environmental samples. The number of analytes reported in literature is increasing annually, with many of them present at low concentrations, making the analysis of samples ever more challenging.
This webinar will provide a short introduction to chromatographic techniques and will include selected presentations related with a chromatographic analysis of food, environmental and biological samples. This webinar is organized within the scope of the Special Issue “Applications of Chromatographic Techniques in Biological, Food and Environmental Samples”, which will be published by the open access journal Molecules, which is now open for submission. You are all invited to participate!

Chair
REQUIMTE/LAQV, Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto, Portugal
Prof Valentina F. Domingues, REQUIMTE/LAQV, Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto, Portugal, will be the chair of the webinar. Her primary research uses chromatography to detect contaminants in biological, food, and environmental samples, for which the development of sample preparation methods is necessary. As the chair of the webinar, Prof. Dr. Valentina F. Domingues will welcome the audience to the subject with a presentation entitled "An overview of gas chromatography in environmental analysis", and she will introduce the two following expert researchers, Dr. Steven Lehotay and Dr. rer. nat. Holger M. Koch.
Invited Speakers
Dr. Steven J. Lehotay has been a research chemist with the USDA Agricultural Research Service since 1992. His scientific investigations and method development research have involved improvement in the analysis of pesticides, veterinary drugs, and other contaminants in food and environmental samples. His research has addressed all aspects of the analytical process, including sample processing, preparation, cleanup, separations, detection, screening, quantification, identification/confirmation, and data processing, using many types of analytical techniques applied in novel and useful ways. He has authored >165 scientific publications plus >235 abstracts and given >135 talks in at least 25 countries on 6 continents. He has been honored with numerous awards, including AOAC International's Wiley Award, and the Stanford c-score index places him among the top 0.19% of published analytical chemists thus far.
Human-Biomonitoring Laboratories, Institute for Prevention and Occupational Medicine (IPA), University Bochum, Germany
Dr. Holger M. Koch is Head of the Human-Biomonitoring Laboratories at the Institute for Prevention and Occupational Medicine (IPA)—Institute of the University Bochum, Germany. He has co-authored over 160 peer-reviewed publications on the exposure and risk assessment of occupational and environmental chemicals, such as plasticizers, bisphenols, parabens, sunscreens, aromatic amines and pesticides. Since 2010, Dr. Koch has been a member of the Human Biomonitoring Commission of the German Environment Agency (UBA), and from 2010–15, he was a member of the Chronic Hazard Advisory Panel on Phthalates (CHAP) of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Since 2017, Dr. Koch has been the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health (IJHEH). In 2018, Dr. Koch was named a Highly Cited Researcher by Web of Science/Clarivate Analytics.
Webinar Content
On Thrusday 27 May 2021, MDPI and the Journal Molecules organized the 7th webinar entitled "Applications of Chromatographic Techniques in Biological, Food and Environmental Samples".
The introduction was held by the Chair of the webinar, Prof. Dr. Valentina F. Domingues, from Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto, Portugal. Professor Domingues also held the first presentation and gave an overview of the use and applications of Gas Chromatography in environmental analysis.
The third presentation was given by Dr. Holger Koch from University Bochum, Germany. He introduced the use of chromatographic techniques in Human biomonitoring, on his presentation entitled "Rapid Sample Preparation by on-Line HPLC in Human Biomonitoring".
The presentations were followed by a Q&A and a discussion, moderated by the Chair. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend. The full recording can be found here on Sciforum website. In order to stay updated on the next webinars on Molecules, be sure to sign up for our newsletter by clicking on “Subscribe” at the top of the page.
Registration
This is a FREE webinar. The number of participants to the live session is limited but the recording will be made available on Sciforum shortly afterwards. Registrations with academic institutional email addresses will be prioritized.
