Welcome from the Chair

Peer Review Week 2022 started on Monday, 19 September 2022. It is a global virtual event celebrating the essential role that peer review plays in maintaining research quality. The event brings together scholars and institutions from different fields committed to sharing the central message that quality peer review is critical to scholarly communication.

At MDPI we have invited three experienced and renown scholars to celebrate this important event and participate in a webinar. The event will be moderated by Dr. Ioana Craciun, scientific officer at MDPI, and will be held in a round table format. The main topics for discussion will be:

  • How peer review contributes to research integrity.
  • Ethical responsibility of reviewers.
  • Different ways of selecting reviewers and how to avoid conflicts of interest.
  • Key aspects of a good review report.
  • Benefits and burdens to be a reviewer.
  • Different peer-review models and its future.

MDPI, Switzerland

Dr. Ioana Craciun joined MDPI in August 2020. She holds a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Florida (2010) and a PhD from the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Experimental Therapeutics, University of Iowa (2016). Her PhD research focused on the design, synthesis, and evaluation of novel aminoglycoside derivatives for the treatment of chronic inflammatory lung diseases. Following her PhD, she completed a post-doc at the University of Basel focusing on the development of polymer-based systems for biomedical applications. Dr. Ioana Craciun also acts as Scientific Coordinator for Preprints.

Clinical Social Worker, Program Coordinator, Social Work; Professor, Social Work, Mount Royal University, Calgary AB Canada

Peter’s teaching focuses on assessment issues in social work, including families, as well as child and adolescent mental health. He has served for 5 years as the Field Director for the First- and Second-Year Practicum Program and is now the Program Coordinator. Peter’s areas of research include: • Assessment of parents within child protection systems including systemic bias issues • Practice errors in child protection linked to serious injury and death • Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Stigma and implications for front line practice • Implementation of Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action within the practice of social work Peter is an expert witness in social work with sub-specialties in the areas of social work case management, parenting capacity (including risk, domestic violence, and addictions), Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and cross-cultural assessment. He has been qualified on over 150 occasions in the Provincial Court of Alberta (Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer and Lethbridge) and the Court of Queen’s Bench (Calgary and Medicine Hat) as well as the Court of Queen’s Bench, Regina. He has published extensively in the field of assessment and child protection. He has spoken nationally and internationally in this area to social workers, lawyers, the judiciary and other mental hearth practitioners. He has also been a member of expert panels reviewing child protection errors with the Child and Youth Advocate in Alberta.

Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Lassonde School of Engineering, York University, Toronto, Canada

Dr. O’Brien holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Toronto. He is currently the director of the Advanced Materials for Sustainable Energy Technologies Laboratory (AM-SET-Lab) at York University. His research is focused on thermal energy storage integrated with HVAC systems for the electrification of heating, radiative cooling panels for building applications, building-integrated photovoltaics, energy harvesting windows, and passive solar heating and cooling.

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Department of Built Environment, USA

Raised in Indiana, Dr. Emmanuel Obeng-Gyasi completed his Bachelor’s in Chemistry (Honors with High Distinction), Master of Public Health (MPH) in Health Administration, and a Doctor of Philosophy with specialization in Environmental Health & Epidemiology from Indiana University, Bloomington. In-between the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, he completed a Graduate Certificate in Environmental and Occupational Health from Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Obeng-Gyasi’s research uses biostatistics, epidemiology, molecular biology, and analytical chemistry techniques to investigate the effects of environmental toxicants on the environment and populations. His research interests include: Metals, PFAS, and Infectious agents and their impact on environmental and human health; mixed exposures, environmental epidemiology and exposure science. His publications have appeared in important outlets in his field and have been translational in nature for the benefit of relevant communities and institutions.
