Peer Review Week 2024: A Roundtable Discussion on Innovation and Technology in Peer Review
(24 Sep 2024)
Welcome from the Chairs
Welcome to MDPI's Peer Review Week 2024 Webinar—a part of the global celebration of peer-review's vital role in maintaining research quality. We are pleased to present this roundtable discussion, which will be co-moderated by Dr. Ioana Craciun, Scientific Communications Specialist, and Dr. Enric Sayas, AI Business Analyst, featuring a panel of scholars and industry experts.
This year, our discussion will explore the concept of "Innovation and Technology in Peer Review," a theme chosen through a global poll to represent the collective voice of the academic world.
The landscape of scholarly publishing is evolving, becoming more focused on authors, with a strong emphasis on research integrity and the integration of AI. Amidst these advancements, tools like ChatGPT are revolutionizing scholarly communication, opening a new realm of ethical challenges and practical considerations.
Today, the demand for greater transparency and efficiency in the peer review process is growing, even as the number of publications increases, and the pool of reviewers struggles to keep up. This has driven innovations aimed at streamlining the process and aligning it more closely with authors' needs. AI tools are gradually being introduced to automate administrative tasks, allowing peer reviewers to concentrate on the most critical aspects of the review process.
While these shifts are reshaping scholarly publishing, the core value of peer review remains largely unchanged. Peer review is the primary means of assessing research rigor, credibility, and potential. However, as the publishing landscape evolves, we must consider the implications for the practice of peer review and its practitioners.
Join us for this roundtable discussion where our panelists will share their experiences and insights into the of future publishing, and essential role of peer review.
The main topics for discussion will include:
- Exploring available tools that are driving innovation
- Assessing the benefits and challenges associated with integrating AI within the peer review
- What is currently in the pipeline?
- What does the future of peer review look like?
