Anaerobic Digestion in the Energy and Biorefinery Context

Anaerobic digestion is a commercial process to generate renewable energy from biomass or biodegradable waste. In a world where biodegradable waste is generated at rates of billions of tonnes of dry matter per year and yet we are facing huge constraints In the availability and sustainability of resources for the energy and chemicals industry, it is imperative that we exploit anaerobic digestion to its full potential.

How can we maximise energy yield from the anaerobic digestion processes? In addition to methane, which other products can we obtain from anaerobic digestion? How can we optimise anaerobic digestion to obtain the desired products? Overall, what role will anaerobic digestion have in a new sustainable planet? We’ll discuss these and other questions in this webinar with outstanding experts in this field.

Chair

School of Engineering, Fraser Noble Building Kings College, University of Aberdeen, UK

Introduction
Bio
Professor Davide Dionisi is Personal Chair in Chemical Engineering at University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK. Prof Dionisi obtained his MEng in Chemical Engineering and PhD in Industrial Chemical Processes from the School of Engineering, Sapienza University, Rome, Italy. Between 2001-2003 Prof Dionisi worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Assistant for the School of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences at Sapienza University, before entering the same School as Lecturer in 2004. In 2007 Prof Dionisi joined Syngenta’s Process Studies Group in the UK, as Process Engineer and then Principal Process Engineer. Prof Dionisi joined University of Aberdeen as a Lecturer in Chemical Engineering in 2012. Prof Dionisi’s research interests are focused on the application of chemical engineering principles to the development of improved, more sustainable and environmentally friendly processes, with particular focus on biological processes with open mixed cultures. At University of Aberdeen, Prof Dionisi teaches biochemical engineering, wastewater treatment and energy from biomass in the undergraduate programme in Chemical Engineering and in the postgraduate programme in Renewable Energy Engineering, which he also co-ordinates.

Invited Speakers

Department of Biotechnology, University of Verona, Italy

Introduction
Bio
Dr Federico Battista is Assistant Professor at the Department of Biotechnology of the University of Verona. Dr Battista gain the PhD in Chemical Engineering at Politecnico di Torino (Italy) in 2015. He went in Lyon (France) in 2016 for a Postdoc position at IFP Energies Nouvelles. Dr. Battista’s research field is represented by the implementation and optimization of biorefinery's unit operations for the valorization of the organic substrates (wastes, residues and byproducts from agricultural and food industries) for the productions of biofuels, the extraction of high added value molecules and the synthesis of innovative bio-based products. He is also interested in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC).
