Dear Colleagues,
We are thrilled to invite you to our upcoming webinar titled "Understanding the Genomic Mechanisms of Oncology," organized by the journal’s Special Issue. As the guest editors and chairs of this event, we are excited to bring together leading experts in the field to share their pioneering research and insights.
In this webinar, we will delve into the latest advancements in oncology genomics, focusing on how these innovations are revolutionizing cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. Our goal is to foster a deeper understanding of the cellular and molecular processes that drive tumorigenesis and explore the potential of personalized medicine.
Featured Lectures:
-
Implication of Nanopore Sequencing in Oncological Care: Dr. Aviad Zick, a senior medical oncologist at the Hebrew University–Hadassah Medical Center and the head of its Cancer Genetics Laboratory, will discuss how nanopore sequencing technology is being applied to unravel the molecular complexities of sarcoma, with the potential to lead to novel and precise diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
-
Patient-derived Tumor Organoids to Advance Personalized Medicine: Dr. Myriam Grunewald, the Head and Scientific Director of the Hadassah Organoid Center, will share her insights on the use of patient-derived tumor organoids and will explore how these models can be utilized to tailor personalized treatments and predict therapeutic responses.
-
Unlocking Insights from Patient-Derived Data: Introducing GENI for Simplified Cancer Genomic Analysis: Professor Yoav Shaul, a member of the Faculty of Medicine at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, will discuss the role of metabolic processes in driving cancer cell aggressiveness. His presentation will focus on identifying metabolic enzymes involved in epithelial–mesenchymal plasticity (EMP) and will demonstrate how the GENI platform can be used to analyze cancer patient data, providing biological interpretations and insights into the mechanisms of action of the EMP program of cancer patient-associated data.
This webinar promises to be a great opportunity for researchers, clinicians, and students to engage with cutting-edge research and discuss the future directions of oncology genomics. Your participation and insights will contribute to the collective effort to advance our understanding and treatment of cancer.

Info-CORE, Bioinformatics Unit of the I-CORE, Faculty of Medicine, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, P.O. Box 12272, Jerusalem 91120, Israel
Dr. Sharona Elgavish was recruited in 2013 to establish and lead a bioinformatics unit (Info-CORE) to address the increasing demand for bioinformatics analysis at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Hadassah Medical Center. The unit primarily focuses on both initial and advanced analyses of sequencing technologies, such as deep sequencing and Nanopore, as well as advanced data analysis from other high-throughput platforms like proteomics, metabolomics, and NanoString, including data integration. Under Dr. Elgavish’s leadership, the unit has collaborated with hundreds of groups on numerous projects. Dr. Elgavish holds a B.Sc. in Chemistry, an M.Sc. in Chemistry and Biological Chemistry, and a Ph.D. in the X-ray Crystallography of Proteins, all from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. After working as a structural biology bioinformatician in the industry, primarily focusing on structure-based drug design, and at the Faculty of Medicine at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, she shifted her focus to genomics and data integration under the NCBI Scientific Visitors Program. She later served as a bioinformatician at the Faculty of Biology at the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion) before becoming the head of Info-CORE, the Bioinformatics Unit at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Dr. Mali Salmon-Divon is an Associate Professor at Ariel University with extensive expertise in bioinformatics and cancer genomics. After completing a PhD in computational immunology, Dr. Salmon-Divon led the development of bioinformatics tools for next-generation sequencing (NGS) at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), UK. Returning to Israel in 2010, she focused on RNA epigenetics at the Cancer Research Center at the Chaim Sheba Medical Center and now leads the Genomic Bioinformatics Laboratory at Ariel University. Dr. Salmon-Divon focuses on cancer genomics, particularly breast cancer. Her research includes identifying genomic signatures of cancer progression, biomarkers for recurrence, and treatment response. With over 90 publications, including in high-impact journals, Dr. Salmon-Divon continues to push the boundaries of oncology genomics.

Patient-derived Tumor Organoids to Advance Personalized Medicine
Dr. Myriam Grunewald earned her PhD in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She was trained as a vascular biologist in the laboratory of Professor Eli Keshet and currently leads a research group at the Faculty of Medicine focusing on vascular aging and age-related diseases. In October 2020, she was appointed to establish the first Organoid Research Center in Israel at Hadassah Hospital. Her laboratory focuses on developing and optimizing a platform that uses patient-derived organoids as preclinical models to advance basic science and translational medical research. Today, more than 200 patient-derived organoids are bio-banked and include tumor-derived organoids that are extensively used by the scientific community in Israel, including academics, clinical laboratories, and biotechnology companies.

Unlocking Insights from Patient-Derived Data: Introducing GENI for Simplified Cancer Genomic Analysis
Dr. Yoav Shaul is an Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Cellular Biology, and his primary research focus revolves around elucidating the instructive role of metabolic processes in driving cancer cell aggressiveness. During his graduate training, he acquired essential skills and a profound understanding of the mechanisms through which cells transduce signals to activate specific features. During my postdoctoral training, he set up a bioinformatic-based platform to systematically analyze metabolic expression profiles in specific cancer types. This analysis led to the formulation of a compelling hypothesis, suggesting that metabolic enzymes play pivotal roles in epithelial-mesenchymal plasticity (EMP). As a result, a major objective of his laboratory work is to rigorously apply biochemical, genetic, and mice-based experiments to provide compelling evidence for the regulatory role of these metabolic enzymes in cell state transitions.
