1st BioTech Webinar

Gene Therapy Technology in the Medical Field

This is the first webinar in the BioTech series. Although BioTech is still quite young, it recently received its first Impact Factor. As EiC, I would like to give credit to the EBMs, the Reviewers, and the Editorial Office for their excellent work that allows us to give a first response, on average, 18 days after submission. It is a pleasure to thank them publicly.

The journal explores various areas of interest and publishes articles on the following topics:

∙ Medical biotechnology, including biopharmaceuticals, gene therapy, and applied immunology;
∙ Molecular diagnostics and therapeutics;
∙ Agricultural and food biotechnology, including genetically modified plants, plant breeding,, and crop improvement;
∙ Marine biotechnology;
∙ Environmental biotechnology, including bioremediation, biomining, phytoremediation, and monitoring;
∙ Microbiology biotechnology, including prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, and applied microbial and cell physiology;
∙ Large-scale biology, including genomics, functional genomics, proteomics, structural genomics, and metabolomics;
∙ Computational biology, including bioinformatics, algorithms, and molecular modeling;
∙ Forensic biotechnology;
∙ Biosecurity;
∙ Ethics in biotechnology;
∙ Biotechnology regulation.

Today, we have two speakers from the medical field: doctors who conduct research and perform clinical procedures on seriously disabling genetic diseases. Dr. Alessandra Ferlini, a professor at the University Hospital of Ferrara, will discuss Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Dr. Marika Pane, a professor at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, will discuss spinal muscular atrophy. They will explain how research and clinical applications of gene therapy are progressively changing the life prospects of patients affected by these harmful diseases.

Gene Therapy in Duchenne/Becker Muscular Dystrophy: Current Status and Future Perspectives
Bio
Alessandra Ferlini is a medical geneticist and neurologist. Her research focuses on innovative genetic diagnoses, omics sciences, RNA profiling in rare diseases, and novel therapeutic strategies in muscular dystrophies. Currently, she is the PI in muscular dystrophy trials based on RNA therapies. She earned her PhD in 1999 at the Imperial College of Medicine, under the supervision of Prof. Francesco Muntoni. She is an Associate Professor in medical genetics and the head of the Medical Genetics Unit at the University Hospital of Ferrara. She has also been an Honorary Visiting Professor at the University College London since 2015. She has participated in 12 EU research grants and several Italian grants. She has also chaired several Working Groups related to Medical Genetics, including SIGU, ESHG, IRDiRC, ERN, EMQN, and ENMC. She also coordinates the Screen4Care project by EU-IMI, which focuses on genomic newborn screening and digital health.

Relevant Journal

BioTech (ISSN 2673-6284) is a multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed scientific journal that provides an advanced forum for investigations and discussions related to the study and application of biotechnology.

The journal publishes experimental and theoretical results in the various fields of biotechnology, including biopharmaceutical; development of genetically modified plants, animals, or aquatic organisms for addressing production or quality aspects of food in agriculture in addition to novel approaches in medicine; applications in the environmental sector aimed at maintaining biodiversity and removing pollutants; development of organisms or enzymes to produce useful chemicals or destroy hazardous/polluting chemicals; bioinformatics methods; and papers related to ethical, philosophical, and regulatory aspects in the biotechnology sector.

The full experimental or methodological details must be provided to reproduce the results. BioTech publishes reviews, regular research papers, and communications. There is no restriction on paper length. The journal may also consider promoting open discussion forums in well-defined areas of interest.
