2nd Brain Sciences Webinar
Advances in Neuropsychiatric Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Neuropsychiatric (NP) systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is one of the most challenging organ involvements in this condition. Unfortunately, none of the NP manifestations that occur in SLE have features that are specific for SLE; therefore, determining the correct diagnosis is a challenging and critical step in order to decide the adequate treatment of individual patients, and in the performance of research studies.
Currently, newer and more advanced neuroimaging technologies are helping in both diagnosis and follow up. Additionally, advances in our knowledge of the main pathogenetic pathways (ischemic and neuroinflammatory mechanisms) allows for a better selection of therapies (antithrombotic or anti-inflammatory/immunomodulatory drugs). Furthermore, a multidisciplinary expert team approach is, without doubt, the best strategy for managing NPSLE.
However, there are still many unmet needs in the management of NPSLE (absence of diagnostic biomarkers, lack of novel therapies, paucity of clinical trials, etc.), which will be the scope of the present webinar of Brain Sciences.

Webinar Content
On Thursday, 30 September 2021, MDPI and the Journal Brain Sciences organized the 2nd webinar on Brain Sciences, entitled "Advances in Neuropsychiatric Systemic Lupus Erythematosus".
The introduction was held by the Chair of the webinar, Prof. Dr. Ricard Cervera. He is Senior Consultant and Head at the Department of Autoimmune Diseases, Hospital Clínic, Barcelona and Director of the Research Team on Systemic Autoimmune Diseases at the Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS) of Barcelona. He is Professor and Director of the Chair UB-GSK on Autoimmune Diseases, Coordinator of the Masters’ on Autoimmune Diseases and Academic Vice-Dean at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona (UB) in Spain.
The first speaker to quick off this webinar was Prof. Dr. Ricard Cervera, with his presentation "Management of Neuropsychiatric Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (NPSLE): EULAR recommendations".
The second presentation with the title "Cerebral microstructure analysis by diffusion-based MRI in systemic lupus erythematosus: lessons learned and research directions" was held by Prof. Dr. Marcello Govoni.
Dr. Giovanni Sanna was the third speaker with his presentation "Neurological manifestations of the antiphospholipid syndrome". He was appointed Consultant Rheumatologist at the Louise Coote Lupus Unit, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, in 2008, having previously worked as a Consultant Rheumatologist at the Homerton University Hospital since 2003. He graduated from the University of Rome in 1991 and was awarded his PhD for studies in neuropsychiatric manifestations of SLE in 2000. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London) in 2006. His research and publications mostly relate to clinical manifestations and management of neurologic disease in lupus and antiphospholipid syndrome.
The presentations were followed by a Q&A and a discussion, moderated by the Chair Prof. Dr. Ricard Cervera. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend.
