Welcome Address from the Chair of the e-Conference
Whither Energy Conversion? Present Trends, Current Problems and Realistic Future Solutions
This e-Conference on energies is another contribution by our Journal to the dissemination of knowledge in the field of energy sources, conversion, and final use. Let me first elaborate on its rationale and then provide some information about the possibilities that such a new form of knowledge dissemination offers.
The field of “Energy” is vast, and its importance is much stronger than claimed by some statisticians (according to which, since energy-related contribution to the GDP is—on a worldwide average—about 10%, this ought to be reflected in its relative ranking among the “strategic issues”). One does not need to be an expert in our field to see though that, quite on the contrary, the relevance of most energy-related topics for the survival of our species is immense and fundamental. What primary sources to tap and how, which conversion processes to adopt and how to combine them, how to improve the efficiency of the source-to-final use chain, how to correctly assess and mitigate the environmental impact, how to link an effective energy policy with a reasonably sustainable development, are all issues that impact not only the long-term survival of our species, but the “conservation”—as a life-harboring planet—of our Earth.
Thence the idea, proposed by our Editorial Office, to offer an international forum for discussion of all of the above topics. The goal is ambitious, and is that of publishing a collective compendium of assessments of the state of the art of current energy-related technologies and their known problems, to present original ideas as to the exploitation of novel sources or the better use of the existing ones.
The title we chose—after some internal debate—is indicative of the complexity of the task and of its importance, and conveys the idea that the issue is an open one and that future improvements can be attained only through careful study of the experience (including the failures!) of the past, the knowledge of the present… and some creative and educated engineering imagination!
We are looking for a response of the energy community commensurable with the importance of this goal and are sure that the e-Proceedings of the conference will constitute an important reference for the next generation of scholars, industrialists, and energy strategists.
The e-Conference is in fact a particular kind of Special Issue, in which manuscripts will be handled as if they were submitted to a physical conference: the topics are pre-selected, and only works relevant to the Conference Call will be considered for our review process. Published papers can thus be expected to be strongly related to each other, so that a complete view of each addressed issue will be presented to the readers.
In fact, articles will be enjoying the status of archival publications, within a Special Issue of Energies which, we hope, will be genuinely “special”!
I wish every success to this initiative and to all of the authors, reviewers and editors who will join us in this endeavor. On our part, we at Energies will spare no effort to make this e-Conference a long-lasting success.

Dr. Enrico Sciubba (M.Eng. Roma 1972, Ph.D. Rutgers, NJ 1981) is Professor of Turbomachinery and of Energy Systems at the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering of the University of Roma Sapienza. He has taught and/or is teaching courses on Turbomachinery, Thermo-fluid-dynamics of machines; Heat transfer; Turbulence; Energy Systems design; Energy Systems Diagnostics; Thermo-Economics & Sustainability—on these topics he is also active as a Lecturer at several international institutions. Dr. Sciubba has held industrial and academic positions in the US and Europe, was awarded two honorary Doctoral Degrees from foreign Universities, is the Faculty Coordinator for the ERASMUS exchange programs, and since 2009 is Director of the Summer School of Thermodynamics of Rome. He has authored or co-authored 4 books (2 in English) and over 200 scientific papers on exergy analysis, CFD-and Process simulation, and advanced turbomachinery design.
Professor Sciubba is an ASME Fellow, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal Energies, Co-Editor of the E3 Journal and Associate Editor for Energy, the International Journal of Thermodynamics, the International Journal of Energy Research, the International Journal of Exergy, the Sustainability Journal, the Journal of Environment, Energy and Ecology, and the Journal of Energy Resources Technologies.

Call for Papers
The conference will address research topics concerned with “present trends, current problems and realistic future solutions on energy conversion”, and it will include five topical sessions focusing on:
- Thermodynamic Fundamental Issues (Section A)
- Present Trends in Energy Conversion from Fossil Sources (Section B)
- Present Trends in Energy Conversion from Renewable Sources (Section C)
- Current Problems in Energy Conversion Technologies (Section D)
- Innovative Futuristic Solutions, Feasible Scenarios and Emerging Concepts (Section E)
The conference will be completely free of charge—both to attend, and for scholars to upload and present their latest work on the conference platform. There will be a possibility to submit selected papers to the journal Energies (ISSN 1996-1073; Impact Factor: 1.844 (2012) and 5-Year 2.087 (2012); www.mdpi.com/journal/energies).

Instructions for Authors
Submissions should be done by the authors online by registering with www.sciforum.net, and using the "New Submission" function once logged into system.
- Scholars interested in participating with the conference can submit their abstract (about 200-300 words covering the areas of manuscripts for the proceedings issue) online on this website until 16 January 2014.
- The Conference Committee will pre-evaluate, based on the submitted abstract, whether a contribution from the authors of the abstract will be welcome for the 1st International e-Conference on Energies.
All authors will be notified by 31 January 2014 about the acceptance of their abstract.
- If the abstract is accepted for this conference, the author is asked to submit his manuscript, optionally along with a PowerPoint and/or video presentation of his/her paper (only PDF), until the submission deadline of 28 February 2014.
- The manuscripts and presentations will be available on sciforum.net/conference/ece-1/page/call for discussion and rating during the time of the conference 14–30 March 2014.
- The Open Access Journal Energies will publish the proceedings of the conference as a Special Issue and accepted papers will be published in the proceedings of the conference. After the conference, the Conference Committee will select manuscripts that may be included for publication in this Special Issue.

Slides should be converted to the PDF format before submission so that our process can easily and automatically convert them for online displaying.

- Accepted File Formats
- MS Word: Manuscript prepared in MS Word must be converted into a single file before submission. Please do not insert any graphics (schemes, figures, etc.) into a movable frame which can superimpose the text and make the layout very difficult.
- LaTeX: ensure to send a copy of your manuscript as a PDF file also, if you decided to use LaTeX. When preparing manuscripts in LaTeX, please use the MDPI LaTeX template files.
- Paper Format: A4 paper format, the printing area is 17.5 cm x 26.2 cm. The margins should be 1.75 cm on each side of the paper (top, bottom, left, and right sides).

A New Three Objectives Criterion to Optimize Thermomechanical Engines

|Regarding thermomechanical engines, the first law efficiency has been until now, the most used criterion, with the famous equilibrium thermodynamics upperbound given by the CARNOT formula. Most recently (second part of the past century), a new appraisal appears, regarding the maximum power objective for the engines. We propose here to reconsider these two main approaches due to the fact that the heat expanses first, and the heat rejected secondly are also involved in the complete characterization of the engine. These three quantities (energy consumption to minimize associated to the cost ; useful effect to maximize ; heat rejection to minimize, in order to protect the environment) are combined through a weighting procedure allowing, to discuss and choose the best scheme. Particular previous studies results are recovered and synthesized. Other new possibilities are proposed to be explored in the near future.|
Analysis and Design of Multicarrier PWM Based Multilevel Z-Source Inverter Fed Induction Motor Drives with DTC

|This paper presents the simulation as well as prototype model for design and analysis of 5-level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter fed medium voltage induction motor drive. The development of prototype model shows the flexibility of the multilevel z-source inverter to establish an ideal AC voltage from more than a few levels of DC voltages with lesser harmonic content. The Z-source network is placed to unite the input DC source and the inverter to accomplish the buck-boost capability. Three different multi-carrier PWM techniques are analyzed and several fascinating characteristics are revealed. The Direct Torque Control (DTC) is the most well-liked approach to control performance of induction motor drive is also presented in this paper. The effect of this paper illustrate that, this developed prototype model will bridges the existing research gap between theoretical and practical execution of multilevel z-source inverters for medium voltage industrial applications. Satisfactory and improved performance of multilevel z-source inverters is demonstrated through test results under various operating circumstances and the effort has been made to validate the effectiveness the simulation and hardware implementation of the proposed inverter topology.|
Application of Fuzzy Logic to Forecast Hourly Solar Irradiation

|Accurate forecasting of solar resource is the key issue for a successful integration of solar plants into the grid. This paper proposes a fuzzy logic approach as an alternative to classical statistics, aiming to forecast hourly global solar irradiation. Hourly clearness index is the quantity directly processed by the proposed fuzzy algorithms. Hourly clearness index is defined as the hourly horizontal global solar irradiation at the ground and the hourly solar irradiation at the top of the atmosphere. Clearness index takes into account all random meteorological influences, being a measure of the atmospheric transparency. Thus, the stochastic component of hourly solar irradiation can be isolated by means of the clearness index. Four new autoregressive-fuzzy models are studied in this paper. The models are mainly differentiated by the number of the input variables and the number of attributes. The model #1 has only one variable at the input (hourly clearness index measured at time t-1) which is characterized by 3 attributes. The model #2 extends the number of inputs increasing the order of auto-regressive terms to two. The model #3 adds to model #1 an exogenous input, namely relative sunshine. The model #4 includes a seasonality term. Overall results show that the model #4 performs the best. The novelties related to the fuzzy model assembly are the membership functions of the attributes and the simple matrix of fuzzy rules. In principle, the actual model can be applied in sites where measurement of hourly global solar irradiation is currently performed, only a re-estimation of the parameters being necessary. The results demonstrate that the fuzzy models have the strength to translate the information enclosed in past measurements into an actual prediction with acceptable accuracy.|
Assessment of the Wave Energy Conversion Patterns in Various Coastal Environments

|An important next stage in exploiting the ocean energy potential is to install several identical devices within an array, like doing in wind farms, to raise in this way their overall electricity production. The way in which the ocean energy devices will perform, as well as their economic viability, is critically linked to their design and moreover they depend directly on the specific environmental conditions characteristic of a certain area. Thus, due to the specific wave climate, one device can perform better than another in a particular coastal area while in another nearshore area the situation might be completely reversed. From this perspective, the main objective of the present work is to assess the performances of various WEC devices that would operate in different coastal environments. Three different groups of coastal environments were considered. They are: (I) the Iberian continental nearshore covering both Spanish and Portuguese coasts, (II) the Canaries Islands and the Archipelago of Madeira and (III) two enclosed seas (Black and Caspian seas). Various wave energy converters were evaluated covering the full range of the existing devices. Among these, the most representational devices considered are: Wave Dragon, Pelamis, Archimedes Wave Swing, Aqua Boy, Oyster, Langlee and Wave Bob. In order to evaluate the electric power expected in a certain location, the bivariate distributions of occurrences corresponding to the sea states defined by the significant wave height and the energy period were designed in each coastal area. The wave data were provided by hindcast studies covering extended time periods that were performed with numerical wave models based on the spectrum concept. The transformation efficiency of the wave energy in electricity was evaluated via the load factor and also through an index defined as the ratio between the electric power estimated to be produced by each specific WEC and the expected wave power corresponding to the location considered.The present work provides valuable information related to the effectiveness of various technologies for the wave energy extraction that would operate in different coastal environments. Moreover, the results can be easily extrapolated to some other nearshore areas.|
Biofuel Similar to Bodiesel Obtained by Using a Lipase from Rhizopus Oryzae, Optimized by Response Surface Methodology

|A new biofuel like biodiesel applicable to diesel engines is obtained by the enzymatic ethanolysis reaction of sunflower oil with ethanol, in free solvent media, by using BIOLIPASE-R®, a low cost powdered enzyme preparation containing obtained lipases from a strain of Rhizopus oryzae. This is a multipurpose additive from Biocon®-Spain, used in food industry. This biofuel integrates glycerol as monoglyceride (MG) together to two fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) molecules by the application of the 1,3-selective lipases. Thus, this process minimizes waste generation and maximizes efficiency of the process because no residual glycerol is produced. Response surface methodology (RSM) is employed to evaluate the main reaction parameters (reaction temperature, oil/ethanol ratio and pH) on the conversion of sunflower oil. Water content and amount of lipase were also investigated. Regarding the results, we found that operates optimally with a water content of the reaction medium of 0.15 %, 0.05 - 0.1 % lipase by weight relative to the weight of oil used, 20 °C, volume ratio (ml/ml) oil/ethanol 12/3.5 and pH 12 (by addition of 75 µl of 10 N NaOH dissolution). These achieved results have proven a very good efficiency of the biocatalyst in the studied selective process.|
